Trap shooting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trap shooting is one of the two major forms of competitive shotgun shooting at clay targets (the other is Skeet shooting).
The layout of modern trap shooting is different from skeet shooting in that there is only one house that releases targets and the shooters only move through 5 different positions.
Trap guns differ from field and skeet guns in several ways and normally shoot higher than their counterparts as the targets are almost always shot on the rise.

Trap shooting, often called "American trap shooting" to distinguish it from other forms of trap shooting, is but one of many sports based on shooting small disks launched into the air.
This last is like trap shooting, except the trap machine is set up to vary both the direction of the clay pigeon's flight and the angle of elevation.
This is called the "trap machine," and sometimes just the "trap." The trap machine throws the birds in a random pattern limited to a 44 degree horizontal arc, with the birds exiting the house at about 47 miles per hour and traveling about 50 yards before hitting the ground.

 Trap Shooting Basic Methods

In trapshooting, you shoot clay targets thrown from a single trap machine that's situated in the "trap house" in front of the shooters.
Like all games, trap shooting has its rules, and one of the first you'll need to know is that the shooter starts with the shotgun in the "mounted" position with the butt stock mounted to the shoulder.

 Skeet and Trap Shooting
In "shooting around the clock," shots were fired to all points of the compass, until a neighbor started a chicken farm in a lot adjoining the kennels.
The trap houses at station one and seven are called the "high house" and "low house." Targets are always thrown in the same pattern of flight, but the angle of the shot varies because the shooter changes position as the skeet squad moves from station to station.
In trap, the shooting is done from five adjacent positions in a crescent-shaped formation 16 or more yards behind the "trap." Shooting is done in rotation with the person in number one position firing first and so on.
