The inhabitants of Trashigang district are mainly Sharchops, which means "easterner" in Dzongkha, the national language.
Trashigang dzongkhag is also the site of Sherubtse College, the original college within the Royal University of Bhutan system.
This dzong, or fortess, was built in 1659 by the third Druk Desi to defend against Tibetian invaders.

Trashigang is also used as the market place of the nomadic people of Merak and Sakteng who are known for their exceptionally sharp features and for their costumes which are brightly colored and different from customary Bhutanese clothing.
Yangtse formerly a sub-division of Trashigang, is one of the newest districts.
The road from Trashigang to Samdrup Jongkhar was completed in the early 1960s and enables the eastern half of the country to access the benefit from the trade in the south as well as providing a border crossing to India.

The fire that began somewhere between the confluence of the Gamrichu and Gongrichu and the Mukthangkhar village was spreading towards the Bartsham-Bidung gewog border.
According to the Trashigang divisional forest officer (DFO), K B Samal, some 40 villagers from Bartsham gewog and 10 dzongkhag and forest officials were combating the fire.
This, according to the DFO, was because the fire in chirpine forest which starts off as a ground fire spreads to the treetop and jumps to the neighboring treetops causing a 'crown fire'.

TRASHIGANG: Mongar sharpshooters outdid the Trashigang team and the Drameste team to lift the first Eastern Regional Archery (compound bow) Tournament trophy played in Trashigang on October 8.
Trashigang’s Tashi Chogyel hit 25 kareys (hits) the highest and Tshewang Namgay of the Trashigang team hit three dobjeys (double hits).
The president of the Trashigang archery club, superintendent of police Major Nagphey said the tournament was organised to encourage and revive the spirit of the sport in the east.

A week after health officials in Trashigang declared that the rabies outbreak was under control, 5 children, an adult, and 10 cows were bitten by a rabid dog on the morning of 1 Feb 2006 in Yonphula, Trashigang.
While post-treatment of the 'directly infected' was underway, the community had killed the rabid dog and disposed of it before the livestock officials could take brain samples for investigation.
It was followed by an outbreak in Pam, Trashigang, in April where only one case was reported.

The hotel in Trashigang was a bit of a contrast with cold washes in a bucket, a clanging prayer wheel and barking dogs all night, and not forgetting the giant flying grasshopper who invaded our room late one night.
We were very sorry to leave Trashigang and its fab weather and friendly people.
We were supposed to drive from Trashigang to Mongar on Sunday, then on to Bumthang on Monday but we ended up journeying for 12 hours doing the whole journey in just one day.
