Hannibal sent a small skirmish force to draw their van away from the front of the line, allowing the rest of the Roman army time to set up for an assault to the east.

Anyway during the forming of the line use any units already in combat just as a distraction and to hold off the Carthaginians till your line is formed.
Once the battle line is formed I suggest you simply use your skirmishers and engage any infantry coming your way while your general and his remaining cavalry flank the enemy from the left or right flanks.
If your line is breaking throw in the Cretan archers and keep the elephants moving their heads up and down to throw enemy units everywhere.

The New Zealanders were assigned the task of joining the Allied effort to breach the Gustav Line by attacking its eastern margins and traversing the Sangro River with the hope of initiating an advance to Rome.
With winter deepening, the whole Allied offensive ground to a halt and spirits were low amongst the New Zealanders when they were finally withdrawn from the stalled front line in January 1944 after suffering some 1600 casualties during their first two months of combat in Italy.
The New Zealanders were back in the line the following month, fighting their way across difficult terrain in a slow advance which brought them to the Savio River by the end of October.

I would love to read an article some day describing the repair of railroads on the east front and itemizing all the railroads that were built during the war.
Somewhere along the line the damage done to the P51 wingman was transfered to the Me262 wingman instead.

Considering that they were only used to soften up enemy lines, their inevitable routing might seem like correct behaviour EXCEPT that the enemy gets victory points for (terminally) routing them which could not be justified if the skirmishers were merely doing what they are supposed to do!
At the time of the Punic wars, the Roman battle lines were no longer rigid phalanxes but rather composed of smaller tactical units, the maniples, which could form a loose double row, allowing for retreating front-line units to pass through, as well as a phalanx-like single row when it was their turn to attack.
Very well, but first of all executing MLE takes the leader's entire turn, and there are no advantages to the single line formation if you're on the attack: the game system doesn't penalise units that move one hex farther to attack.

E poi altre linee e avamposti difensivi intorno a Pescia, Ranciano e poi ancora più avanti sul crinale fra Sanfatucchio e Vaiano.
Pur avendo subito ingenti perdite e essendo dovuti arretrare, i tedeschi sarebbero stati in grado, probabilmente, di tenere ancora le posizioni intorno alla Trasimene Line, se non fosse per la potenziale minaccia di vedersi tagliate le vie della ritirata.
