The War of the Spanish Succession soon followed, and Traun served with distinction in Italy and on the Rhine till 1709, when he became lieutenant-colonel and aide-de-camp to Field Marshal Count Guido Starhemberg (1654-1737) in Spairf.
A year later, for specially distinguished services, he was made colonel, and in 1712 chief of a regiment of foot.
Trauns last active service was the command of an army which was sent to Frankfurt to influence the election of a new emperor to succeed Charles VII.

 Upper Austria, Austria
Until the 19th century Upper Austria was known as the Land ob der Enns ("Province on the Enns"); it is traditionally divided into the Mühlviertel, the Innviertel, the Hausruck- and Traun region, the Danube valley, the Apline foreland zone and the mountain region.
Upper Austria is drained by the Danube and its tributaries, the Inn, the Traun and the Enns on the south and the Mühl, the Rodl, the Gusen, the Aist and the Naarn on the north.
In the first half of the 15th century, too, the territories north of the Danube suffered under Hussite raids; and Upper Austria was also ravaged by the Peasant Wars of 1525 and 1625 (stories of the popular hero Fadinger, and the dice-game known as the Frankenburger Würfelspiel).

 Up The Danube
The third day we came to the Danube again at Melk, a little city built under the edge of a steep hill, on whose summit stands the palace-like abbey of the Benedictine Monks.
If we looked to the right we could trace the windings of the Danube for twenty miles, his current filled with green, wooded islands; white cities lie at the foot of the hills, which, covered to the summit with grain-fields and vine-yards, extended back one behind another, till the farthest were lost in the distance.
I was glad we had taken the way from Vienna to Linz by land, for from the heights we had a, view of the whole course of the Danube, enjoying besides, the beauty of the inland vales and the far-off Styrian Alps.

At the close of this first act of the campaign the French, under the old Marshal de Broglie, maintained a precarious foothold in central Bohemia, menaced by the main army of the Austrians, and Khevenhüller was ranging unopposed in Bavaria, while Frederick, in pursuance of his secret obligations, lay inactive in Silesia.
Broglie\'s command was now on the Danube, east of Regensburg, and the imperial (chiefly Bavarian) army of Charles VII under Seckendorf (1673–1763) aided him to clear Bavaria of the Austrians.
Marshal Traun was successful, and the Grand-Duke became the Emperor Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor on 13 September.

 The Austrian Alps
As we neared the other extremity, the mountains became steeper and loftier; there was no path along their wild sides, nor even a fisher's, but nestled at their feet, and the snow filled the ravines more than half-way from the summit.
Finally the hills opened, disclosing a little triangular valley, whose base was formed by a mighty mountain covered with clouds., Through the two side-angles came the Traun and his tributary the Ischl, while the little town of Ischl lay in the centre.
