Because of their deep involvement with the early fund-raising and their increasing political clout in Georgia, the Klan, along with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, were able to influence the ideology of the carving, and they strongly supported an explicitly Confederate memorial.
In 1958, at the urging of Governor Marvin Griffin, the Georgia legislature approved a measure to purchase Stone Mountain for $1,125,000.
The park is owned by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, a Georgia state authority, but the Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation currently has the contract to operate the park and its attractions.

Traveler's Rest was the plantation home of Devereaux Jarrett, the "richest man in the Tugaloo Valley." Jarrett bought the site in 1833 and made it the center of his thriving plantation.
When English traveler George W. Featherstonhaugh visited Traveler's Rest in 1837, he was pleasantly surprised.
In 1966, Traveler's Rest was recognized as a National Historic Landmark because of its fine architecture, including a 90-foot-long porch and hand-numbered rafters.

Joseph E. Brown, governor and senator from Georgia is rumored to have spent his wedding night on the first floor of the inn.
Mary Jarrett White, who sold her great-grandfather's inn to the state of Georgia, was the first woman in the state to vote.

The name was inspired by the fact that members had traveled to various places for worship before construction of their first church building.
In January 1984, they announced to the Travelers Rest congregation that Life and Praise Tabernacle, located at 2778 Snapfinger Road in Decatur, Georgia, was available.
Although some Travelers Rest members chose to remain at their church in Scottdale, later that year, on Sunday May 20th, about 150 people gathered at 2778 Snapfinger Road for their first church service in the new building.
