The TPO Duty Allowance is designed to compensate to some degree for the loss of the amenities which are accepted as normal in the Stationary Offices, and the lack of which will be dealt with more fully in another couple of pages or so.
The Post Office Doctor has a very difficult task here, as, while it is a relatively simple matter for an experienced Medical man to count a chap's legs and rule him out should he be one short, it's another thing entirely to diagnose an ulcer, for instance, if a chap refuses to admit to it.
One of the rules in the TPO Rule Book which is never broken, is the one to the effect that a failure of duty is to be avoided at all costs, and that in the event of a failure being inevitable, every effort should be made to reduce it to the minimum.

The stamp on this cover was the ½a red watercolour of the Jammu old rectangulars obliterated with the square fl seal of the native post office at Jammu City, and the cover shows additional postmarks of Umballa, the spelling of which differs from that of the label in respect of the initial letter.

The obliteration on the stamp is the large barred-L of the British Post Office at Srinagar (Kashmir).

The Princeton post office was reopened on July 6, 1841 with William Grinton as postmaster.

 Whitehaven TPO
The Whitehaven - Huddersfield and Huddersfield - Whitehaven TPOs are direct descendants of the Carnforth and Whitehaven Sorting Carriage which is shown by Post Office records to have commenced service in January 1875, but which may have operated as early as 1869.
The TPO was suspended from September 1940 to October 1946.
On 3 January 1965 the TPO was extended to and from Stalybridge as a result of the cessation of the Liverpool - Huddersfield TPO.

The first proper travelling post office (a converted horse box), in which the mail could be sorted, ran between Birmingham and Warrington on the Grand Junction Railway in January 1838.
In the late 19th century the TPOs were specially timed to coincide with the ships which carried foreign mail, the 'Irish Mail' running from London to Holyhead, which also carried mail for the USA from 1895, and the 'Continental' TPO from London to Dover.
The South Western TPO ran to Southampton and the Portsmouth Sorting Carriage was particularly important for conveying mail to Queen Victoria when she was at Osborne on the Isle of Wight.

Most mail traveled in closed pouches or sacks, unopened from one terminal post office to the next, where it was held for examination, separation, and dispatch on the next day.
The act had a twofold effect: it increased the use of railroads to transmit the mails and limited the use of post riders and horse-drawn vehicles to post offices that were not on railway routes.
The examinations were generally administered at the office of the division superintendent, using a letter case consisting of pigeonholes and boxes labeled with the names of various railway and local post offices.
