Burton Holmes and his Travelogues   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Holmes introduced film clips into his lecture series as early as 1897, but the mainstays of the original lectures were fl-and-white lantern slides, printed from his phtographs, which had been hand-colored with great care in Japan.
The Burton Holmes Lectures, based on the slides and his narrations for them, were reorganized into a series of books, originally published in 1901 in ten volumes.
The later part of the story is covered in Thayer Soule's On the Road with Travelogues; Soule was Holmes' right-hand man from 1935 to the day Holmes retired, and went on to become famous in his own right.
