Based on a novel which he wrote 'for fun', it deals with the problems of a 'Candide'-like young banker, who is taken over by the eponymous Aunt at his mother's funeral and swept by her into a strange new world of intrigue and mystery.
Even the player of the Aunt has to step outside his/her role (all the characters are played by males) and assume the role of her nephew from time to time.
Perhaps the only criticism I might put forward is that he made the Aunt a little too old, making her lasciviousness and lust a little unbelievable (the book portrays her as a raunchy woman but not that old).

My theatrical wanderings for the past couple of months have taken me on an exploration of plays created without the hand of a playwright.
Less successful was ACT's adaptation of Graham Greene's Travels With My Aunt, adapted and directed by Giles Havergal of the Citizens' Theatre of Glasgow.
As for the creation of ACT's Travels With My Aunt, Havergal claims it was strictly a "scissors-and-paste job." Virtually every line in the play is from Greene's novel.

This problem was exacerbated by Smith's age (late thirties)--which in my opinion was a dreadfully ill-conceived mismatch to the elderly Aunt Augusta--and a script so replete with outright silliness that one can hardly believe it could be a Jay Presson Allen adaptation.
There are little twists and turns that add to the piquant essence of the whole film, such as Henry's true parentage both maternal and paternal, and Augusta's own self-interpretation of her life and actions over the years.
The final scene will bring tears of laughter to your eyes and you should be left with a good feeling because "Travels with my Aunt" is a feel good with a bit of a difference.
