Travis Air Force Base is a United States Air Force airfield in the Central Valley of California, near Fairfield, CA.
The base’s host unit, the 60th Air Mobility Wing, is the largest wing in the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, with a versatile fleet of 37 C-5 Galaxies and 27 KC-10 Extenders.
Construction began on Travis in 1942, and originally medium attack bombers where supposed to be stationed at the base, and the United States Navy also had aircraft at the base for training, but this proved temporary.

The base was previously known as Fairfield-Suisun AFB, but was renamed for Brigadier General Robert F. Travis who was killed when a B-29 Superfortress crashed on August 5, 1950.
The base was renamed on October 20, with an official ceremony the next year on April 20, 1951.
World War II was well underway when the Fifteenth Air Force was established in the Mediterranean theater as a strategic air force.

Travis AFB should continue to monitor the extent of the soil gases in the vicinity of Buildings 810, 844 and 845, to verify that thye are not migrating into areas where they could present a public health hazard.

Al Halabi, who was born in Syria and speaks fluent Arabic, was a supply clerk at Travis Air Force Base when he was reassigned to work as a translator at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the government is holding some 600 suspected members of al Qaeda and the Taliban.
Al Halabi was moved to Travis on Monday from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County.
