Trawden is a small traditional village located in East Lancashire to the edge of Colne largely made up of stone terraced cottage properties, farms and newer detached and semi detached houses.
Trawden Community Group (TCG) is a non political group and was originally established to campaign for the protection of the Village Green in the upper part of the village.

Joseph Waddington (my great-great grandfather) was born in 1820 at Trawden (according to all the censuses) and was the 4th of the 8 children of Robert Waddington and Mary (nee Holmes).
William Edmundson Mitchell born in the 2nd quarter of 1873 at Trawden was a cotton weaver aged 17.
Martha Jane Bracewell was born in the 3rd quarter of 1878 at Colne, and married Samuel Driver in the 1st quarter of 1901.

This is the main Parish Church of the village, situated at a junction where the road going to the right either loops back toward Colne or you can ascend up to join other minor roads that link the farmsteads with both Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The War memorial records the names of Trawdeners who died in active service for their nation.
I have 2 sons still in Trawden and 1 in Colne, my youngest son Stephen is here in N.Z but lives in Auckland.

It was named St Mary's in memory of Mary Foulds of Trawden Hall (built in 1540), who died in 1817.
Now Trawden is largely a residential area with some farming and one mill - Hollin Hall Mill, which makes and sells threads to the textile industry and the public.
Close by is the hamlet of Winewall, often confused by all and sundry (including the UK post office!) to be the same as Trawden.

FEATHERS were flying in Trawden as women shimmied, swirled and twirled boas during a belly-dancing workshop.
The villagers are quite well established when it comes to dancing with veils, but using a feather boa introduced a new skill to their repertoire, as well as providing a lot of giggles.
They were told that Empress Textiles, which moved to Trawden from Colne several years ago, wanted to use the money from the sale of the site to buy a modern unit on an industrial estate in Pendle.

I went into the mill when I was 14, the mill still had gas lamps; in fact not many of the houses around Trawden had electric light until 1947 or 48.
Being in the country we were fairly safe, we would sometimes see and hear the German bombers flying over, probably on there way to the coast and I think only the odd bomb was dropped in the area.
They had tank traps in Trawden and pill- boxes, also there were dummy pill- boxes in the church walls and coiled barbed wire around the fields.

Although built under a Light Railway Order to a 4-foot gauge (the same gauge as the surrounding tramways in Nelson, Burnley, Blackburn and Accrington) and apart from small sections of reserved track on the Trawden route, the system was a street tramway.
The Park Hotel in Trawden was reached by a line from the depot down Skipton Road, opened on 22nd January 1904.
Opening a route along Heifer Lane and Keighley Road to Emmott Lane in the village of Laneshawbridge in December 1904 and an extension of the Trawden route further into that town to Lane House Lane in December 1905 completed the system, bringing it to a length of five and a quarter miles.

Discussions over a small community-based turbine scheme in Trawden were well under way when it emerged that Derbyshire-based company Bolsterstone plc had carried out feasibility studies and tests around Boulsworth Hill.
Trawden Forest parish councillors who were involved with the small-scale community scheme, which would have included two or three turbines, said their plans had been hijacked and they could be punished for showing a willingness to "do their bit" for the environment.
I became aware of a community scheme to create a wind farm in the area, and thought it was a good opportunity to share some information.
