The treaty was negotiated for the U.S. by Albert Gallatin, ambassador to France, and Richard Rush, ambassador to Britain; and for Britain by Frederick John Robinson, Treasurer of the Royal Navy and member of the privy council, and Henry Goulburn, an undersecretary of state.
The Convention of 1818, along with the Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1817, marked the beginning of friendly relations between the United Kingdom and its former colony, and paved the way for future good relations between the USA and Canada.

These treaties, of which the Treaty of Fort Stanwix signed in 1784 is an example, are remembered by Native Americans as demonstrations that Europeans could not be trusted to keep their promises, even when the promises were put in writing.
The final treaty was signed on November 5 with one signatory for each of the Six Nations and in the presence of representatives from New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania as well as Johnson.
Another treaty was conducted at the fort between the United States and Native Americans in 1784, one of several treaties signed after the American victory in the Revolutionary War.

 Saginaw Treaty of 1819
The first mention of SAGINAW in an Indian treaty between the United States and the Indian tribes appears to have been in the "Treaty with the OTTOWAS, etc., 1807" made at Detroit in which "the United States...further stipulates to furnish the said Indians with two flsmiths, one to reside with the Chippewas at Saguina".
Removal of the Chippewas to lands west of the Mississippi, at least west of Lake Michigan, was one of the purposes of the treaty, in addition to the cession of the valuable body of land lying upon the Saginaw and its tributaries.
This treaty shall take effect, and be obligatory on the contracting parties, so soon as the same shall be ratified by the President of United States, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate thereof.

The Chickasaw people are aware that one clerk is insufficient to the bringing of their lands early into market; and rather than encounter the delay which must ensue, they prefer the increased expense of an additional one.
It is therefore stipulated that the President shall appoint another clerk, at the same annual compensation, agreed upon by the "Treaty of Pontitock;" who shall be paid after the manner prescribed therein.
But whenever the President shall be of opinion that the services of any officer employed under this treaty, for the sale of lands can be dispensed with; he will in justice to the Chickasaws, and to save them from unnecessary expenses, discontinue the whole, or such as can be dispensed with.
