Topic: Treaty of Meerssen

 [No title]
In 843, by the treaty of Verdun, it became part of Lotharingia (Lorraine), and in 879 was annexed to the kingdom of East Francia (Germany) by the treaty of Meerssen.
The nucleus of the later county and duchy was the gau or district surrounding the town of Gelder or Gelre, lying between the Meuse and the Niers, and since 1715 included in Rhenish Prussia.
By the treaty of Utrecht (1715) this was ceded to Prussia with the exception of Venloo, which fell to the United Provinces, and Roermonde, which, with the remaining Spanish Netherlands, passed to Austria.

Denmark rejected the treaty at first, and then accepted it, in national referendums in June 1992 and May 1993.
The French only narrowly voted in favour in September 1992 and a British government proposal to go ahead with ratification in November 1992 was passed by only a small parliamentary majority, prompting the then British prime minister, John Major, to delay ratification until after a second Danish national referendum.
By the end of 1992, all parliaments, apart from those of Denmark and Britain, had completed ratification, and at a summit in Edinburgh in December 1992, a series of compromises was agreed, including limited Danish participation.

Though often presented as the beginning of a devolution or dissolution of Charlemagne's unitary empire, it in fact reflected the continued adherence to the Frankish idea of a partible or divisible inheritance rather than primogeniture, inheritance by the eldest son.
