Japanese-Korean relations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Japan is one of four major powers (along with the United States, Russia, and China) that have important security interests on the Korean Peninsula.
Japan's relations with North Korea and South Korea has a legacy of bitterness stemming from harsh Japanese colonial rule over Korea from 1910 to 1945.
The negotiations were aided by Tokyo's support of a proposal for simultaneous entry to the UN by North Korea and the Republic of Korea (South Korea); the issues of international inspection of North Korean nuclear facilities and the nature and amount of Japanese economic assistance, however, proved more difficult to negotiate.

Korean-Japanese disputes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Korea was annexed by Japan between 1910 and 1945, and Koreans generally view this period as one of brutal exploitation and suppression of Korean culture.
The two Koreas say that the name "East Sea" (or the "East Sea of Korea" in North Korea's case) should be the official name instead of, or at least concurrently with, "Sea of Japan".
Japan claims that most Western countries named it the "Sea of Japan" in the late 1800's, prior to the annexation of Korea in 1910.

E Law: Was the 1910 Annexation Treaty Between Korea and Japan Concluded Legally?
Japan's official stance has been that the Treaty was concluded legally and it remained valid until the Japanese colonial rule was ended as a result of its defeat in the World War II.
While international courts have upheld a provision of a treaty that is clearly intended to have a retrospective effect[7], the provision of the Vienna Convention lacks the specificity to be applicable to the present case.
Japan maintains that, in relation to South Korea, the Annexation Treaty became void on 15 August 1948; and in relation to North Korea, on 9 September 1948.

Article 2 of the Treaty of Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea of 22 June 1965 reads: "It is confirmed that all treaties or agreements concluded between the Empire of Japan and the Empire of Korea on or before August 22, 1910 are already null and void".[12] 12.
The official stance of Japan on this issue is that the Annexation Treaty was legally concluded and remained in effect until Korea's independence from Japan.[14] This position is not inconsistent with the interpretation of Article 2 of the Basic Relations Treaty discussed above.
Therefore, Japan's stance that the Annexation Treaty remained valid until 15 August 1948 in the South and until 9 September 1948 in the North is questionable.[15] 13.
