Trebic lies on both banks of the River Jihlava, which forms a natural axis of the city and actually of the whole Trebic administrative district.
Trebic lost its original Gothic appearance in 1468 when it was almost completely wiped off the face of the earth during the wars between Jiri of Podebrady and Mathias Korvin.
The present-day Trebic is a city with the population of 40,000.

Located on the banks of the Jihlava River, Trebic was founded at the beginning of the 12th century with the building of a Benedictine Monastery which was one of the richest during the reign of the Premysl dynasty
But the former Jewish town isn't the only sight in Trebic to have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List: that distinction is shared by the mid-13th century St Prokop's Basilica, which is located on a hill not far from the Zamosti district.
Trebic's traditional leather and shoe-making industries (Tomas Bata opened a factory in the town in the mid 1930s) have all but died out, and now the local authorities are hoping Trebic's recent inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List will benefit tourism in the area and help create jobs.

The so-called Rear Synagogue in the Moravian town of Trebic, in the southern part of the Czech Republic, was opened to the public Sept. 1st, 1997, after a lengthy restoration process that recovered numerous wall texts, elaborate wall and ceiling paintings and baroque stucco decoration.
Restoration of the synagogue was carried out as part of an overall municipal plan to revitalize the dilapidated area of Trebic on the left bank of the Jihlava river as a National Heritage Town Zone.
The revitalization program is being carried out by Trebic Fund, an organization established in 1993 by the Town Council in collaboration with the private ABF Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction.

The Jewish quarter is partly renovated, and the sad feeling about the Holocaust also in this Community, with only a few survivors gives a deep impression of horrible times in a very nice surrounding.
My visit was on August 14, 2003, and Trebic is very well signposted on the roads.
