 Octave treble clef
The vocal tenor clef is used in vocal music for the male tenor voice part to indicate that the tenor voice actually sounds an octave lower that where it is notated in the normal treble clef.
The vocal tenor clef should not be confused with the C clef that is also named tenor clef.
In the past, the C clef known as the tenor clef was used for the tenor voice and is still used for other instruments in the same range such as the trombone, the cello, and the bassoon.

The treble clef is probably the most widely-used clef, followed by the bass clef.
However, the F clef has historically been used on other lines of the musical staff, most notably on the middle line, when it is known as the baritone clef.
The C clef is sometimes also used to indicate the mezzo-soprano or flautalto clef, which assigns C to the second line from the bottom of the staff.

When I was taught tenor clef I was told to think of it as bass clef just one string to the left since it is a perfect 5th.
I'm puzzled by your transposition from the treble clef to the tenor.
You said,"The true treble clef is 'a long way' from the tenor note placements." I guess, from your description, that I really meant I was thinking in that treble-treble clef (although I didn't know I was doing it at the time) and lowering it one line or space, or whole tone.

The treble clef is also called the G-clef, because it originated hundreds of years ago as a stylized letter 'G'.
The alto clef is used by violas in an orchestra.
With the neutral clef, no pitches are indicated, because this clef is used by instruments that produce no specific pitch: snare drum, bass drum, tom toms, etc. The staff also looks a little unusual: it is obviously a staff for two different percussion instruments, one with a high sound, the other with a low sound.
