The Jesse Tree   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Jesse Tree has its origin in the statement in scripture that King David was a shoot from Jesse, like a twig or branch from a tree; a fanciful way of saying that Jesse was his grandfather.
Jesse Trees are to be found in medieval sculpture and in old stained-glass windows.
The tree is decorated with symbols which remind us of the promise of salvation made by God at the fall of Adam and Eve and of the ancestors of Jesus from Adam to Our Lady and events in salvation history.

Medieval Painting of the Tree of Jesse, Chalgrove, Oxfordshire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
As a painted subject, the Tree of Jesse demands space if it is to be intelligible, and even in the lofty chancel at Chalgrove there might not have been as much space available as the painter would have liked.
Some English Trees of Jesse have or had (usually the latter) a recumbent Jesse as the root of the symbolic tree, but at Chalgrove the ancestor of Christ is instead represented by an inscription quoting, almost certainly, Isaiah 11:1 - ‘Et egredietur virga radice Jesse et flos de radice ejus ascendit’¹.
The very existence of the Tree of Jesse as a subject in English wall painting goes some way towards explaining the apparent lack of interest among painters in the histories narrated in the Jewish Bible or Old Testament.
