Update on spirit trees American Forests - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Spirit or jumbie trees are homes of ancestral spirits; these trees generally represent dual values and can be spiteful or playful, according to how they are treated or the vagaries of the moment.
Spirit trees take many forms but the most familiar are the silk cotton (Ceiba pentandra) and wild fig (Ficus trigonata, Ficus citrifolia, or Ficus spp.), which enslaved West Africans found when they crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
Baobab and tamarind, spirit trees of the West African savannah, were introduced to the Caribbean, and enslaved Africans soon ascribed spiritual status to Caribbean trees such as West Indian locust and West Indian cedar.

Many people today take the presence of trees for granted, unaware of their greater significance in Earth’s ecology, their medicinal and nutritional properties, or the veneration bestowed on them by ancient peoples.
Fred Hageneder explores the relationship of humanity and trees, helping us to appreciate the true significance, not only of their biology and physical structure, but also of their healing powers, mystical meaning, and their ability to soothe, sustain and inspire humankind.

 Spirit of Trees – Home
Over the last centuries Western society has created a mental split between itself and nature, as well as between matter and spirit, which, together with a deconsecration of the land and its natural life, has brought the whole world to the very edge of an irreversible ecological crisis.
Mythical and mystical experience has always played an important role in maintaining the view of the Earth as being a special place to be treated with care and respect.
A deeper look at nature and at what we have lost in the past are steps to heal the split inside us – and thus to heal this beautiful planet and re-establish its essential glory; to create a world in which all species – human, animal and plant – can flourish.
