Breeds on heaths and farmland with isolated clumps of trees, and on the edges of woods.
Olive-tree Warblers are surprisingly easy to identify thanks to a combination of large size, striking pale wing panel and the way the massive orange bill contrasts with the bluish-grey head.
Like Upcher’s Warbler they are bigger than Olivaceous Warblers and have a habit of waving around their dark-looking tail but the prominent pale wing panel, long-headed look and almost blue-grey upperparts should prevent confusion even if you’ve never seen either species.

This quietly dressed warbler is to be found in fairly deep woods where the vine maples grow under the firs and moss carpets the ground.
Here is the warbler with the five yellow spots, one on the crown, one on the throat, one on each side and one on the rump.
Although it is a true tree warbler, it likes the open woods, and the alpine growth is the most suitable place for it in the park.

However, the alder flycatcher, Connecticut and Wilson's warblers were at the bottom of the ridge in the wood edge along a wet meadow and in the edge of the woods, respectively, at a point where Becket Ridge drains into the meadow via a series of ditches and creeks.
Warblers were around the smaller ponds on both sides of Tealtown Rd. There was a Barred Owl fledgling perched in a young tree overhanging the main path to Krippendorf Lodge.

This difficult warbler is probably responsible for more false alarms than actual 'solid' observations.
Once I was convinced that the behaviour was good for Upcher's, I moved in to take some plumage details noticing especially how thick and full the tail appeared, with notable white outers and tips to the tail feathers.
Especially notable were the neat pale fringes to the longest tertial and the secondries forming a distinct, crisp wing panel contrasting with the grey upperparts.

The first calling warbler (a European Marsh) was deemed to be too inaccessible, and our attempts to see a second resulted in mere fleeting glimpses, before we were sidetracked into trying to see one of the numerous Harlequin Quails, which seemed to be calling from all over the area.
A thick patch of trees, with dense thickets and undergrowth produced first a pair of Le Vaillant's Cuckoo, and then several excellent sightings of European Marsh Warbler, and then Common Whitethroat - which sat up on a bush, showing it's diagnostic jizz.
A second stop at the spot where Olive-Tree warbler had been calling proved worthwhile as the bird kept calling and provided glimpses before diving into a dense acacia tree and disappearing.

Marsh Warblers are exceptionally difficult to identify by sight: even birds in the hand can prove impossible!
However, compared to a Reed Warbler they should be a colder, greyer brown tone, with longer primaries and brighter, yellower legs and feet.

Several warbler species, a pair of gnatcatchers and many towhees in full song where there was but one the day before.
A Kentucky Warbler was heard only at about 6:30am and later at about 8:30am.
The bird was actively feeding hign in the trees close to the the tallest hill with the big monument (above the Common parking garage).

 Indicator Birding - Ezemvelo Weekend October 28-30 2005
The weekend takes place at the very best time to find the elusive and sought after River Warbler.
Species to be expected include Common White-throat, Olive-tree Warbler, Garden Warbler, Marsh Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, and quite possibly at this time of year, Thrush Nightingale and River Warbler.
The latter usually requires an early start and some patience to have a chance of seeing, and we will be there at the right time to locate this bird, which has in some previous years been common in the area.
