The Andean bear or Spectacled bear in Ecuador - Tremarctos ornatus This is a unique opportunity for you to participate in the only research project in the world studying wild Andean bears.
It is being conducted by biologist Armando Castellanos as part of ongoing efforts to expand protected areas and pre vent the extinction of the Andean Bear.
In these ways we are saving both the individual bears and providing some of the scientific basis needed to preserve the biodiversity of the area.

Less Debt, More Conservation - Printer Friendly
Another area to benefit from the debt swap initiative is the Andean Oak Corridor, in the northwest, home to one of the broadest extensions of oak trees in the country.
WWF says that zone has unique elements of biodiversity, including a seemingly endless array of endemic species, as well as animals that require large areas of natural habitat to survive, like the Andean (or spectacled) bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and the tapir (Tapirus pinchaque).
Money is also to be earmarked for the Sumapaz-Tinigua Conservation Corridor, in central Colombia, where there is natural diversity characteristic of Amazonian and Andean ecosystems, including hummingbirds, which use the hillsides in their migratory journey.

Arctodus simus (Cope-1897), which is more closely related to the Andean Bears, Tremarctos than to Ursus, have been found in several locations from Mexico to Alaska.
Those specimens from Alaska, known as Arctodus simus yukonensis, are typically more robust than those specimens found in more southern latitudes.

WWF's approach to species is linked to the ecoregional conservation programs, including protection of key habitats and biological processes relevant for species survival.
For example, at the Northern Andes, the Andean or Spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and the condor were chosen as the focal species, both extremely sensitive to habitat loss.
They need big extensions of mountains and interconnected wetlands for their survival.

Like many bears, living Spectacled Bear males are about twice as big as the female.
This difference in size is also seen in the extinct species, Tremarctos floridanus, so it was probably also true for our Tremarctos here at Hagerman.
Unfortunately, with only two examples of the same bone, we can't say for sure, but based on its larger size, our new bone may have come from a male.
