Yawney was not an overly physical player, but he was a strong skater with a good positional game so he was not a liability in the defensive zone.
Yawney was a solid defenseman for the Blackhawks from 1988 until he was traded to Calgary in 1991 where he spent the next five seasons.
Yawney was named as an assistant coach with the Blackhawks on February 24, 1999, and was named as the first coach of the AHL's Norfolk Admirals on June 23, 2000.

Yawney, a defenseman who had put up 13 goals and 46 assists for the WHL's Saskatoon Blades in 1983-84, was projected by Central Scouting to go in the mid to late first round.
When the Blackhawks used their second choice to take Yawney (round 3, 45th overall), the only person who was happier than Yawney was Chicago's scouting director Jack Davison, the man who directed every draft for the Hawks until 1992.
