Trespass 1970 is the second studio album released by Genesis.
While the band's lineup was nearly identical to that of their previous album, From Genesis to Revelation, Trespass' progressive rock sound was a marked departure from their earlier work, and foreshadowed the path the band would follow through the 70's.
While most of the tracks on the album are only of historical interest to fans, the rocking nine-minute closer, "The Knife" became a live favourite and appeared on Genesis' 1973 live compilation.

While the band's lineup was nearly identical to that of their previous album, From Genesis to Revelation, Trespass had a folk-flavoured progressive rock sound that was a marked departure from their earlier work, and foreshadowed the path the band would follow through the 1970s.
Although Trespass was not a commericial success, it was a critical one and despite its lack of sales, it managed to reach a peak of #98 in the UK upon its 1984 re-release.

Genesis - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Trespass is definitely one of the most recommended albums in the early years for Genesis.
Though Genesis was going to spend a lot more time between albums, they were still on a creative streak that allowed their music to be both conventionally mainstream and of the highest quality at the same time.
The most impressive segment of the album is the two part "Domino", which was as epic and complex as the band would even attempt to be at this point in their career.

For their first Charisma album, and the fact that the band members couldn't have been much out of school when launched, this is a masterpiece of musical and poetic ingenuity and technical quality.
Overall, the album is not quite a masterpiec but deserves much more recognition than it currently receives, but the best was yet to come as the lineup underwent another facelift...
The point of 'Trespass' is not to reach any philosophical conclusion but to express that life is a battle for understanding and between good and evil; represented by the lyrics 'some of you are going to die' (in a distorted voice) vs. 'We have won!'.

The album was overproduced and it became evident that the group didn't have their own sound yet (many complain that the band's first albun sounds like an early Bee Gees rip off!) By 1970, the group had changed its name to the shorter Genesis.
From the beginning to the very end, Trespass is one of the best (and sadly, most underrated) albums in the Genesis catalogue.
Trespass is underrated Genesis, and it's a crime this album hasn't gotten more positive publicity over the years.

This album was everything TRESPASS had failed to be: heavier, more focused, and filled with riches, from the anthemic "Watcher of the Skies" to the bitingly sarcastic take on landlords, "Get 'Em Out By Friday." The album was dominated by orchestral Mellotrons and organs through which guitar lines cut and over which soared flutes.
TRESPASS was released in 1970, and generally Genesis released one album a year up through the mid-70's.
That first album was released in 1968, and is a simple collection of around a dozen songs, all of which sound like the sort of demos a "song writers' collective" of teenaged boys might write.

It is nothing like any other Genesis album, sounding at times like really bad early Bee Gees music (which the band openly admits that they attempted to mimic to continue to attract the passing interest of their then producer, Jonathan King, who was partial to the Bee Gees at the time).
Trespass would remain one of the band's heaviest and darkest albums of their career.
Anyone who buys the album for the first time now might not realize that the original U.S. version of the album was a double LP with the fourth side containing studio tracks (including "Me and Virgil" which you can no longer get on any Genesis album).

Thats when they were at thier most creative and multitalented and Trespass thier second album perfectly shows this on all its long songs which are most of the album.
Although they were using 16-track (a quantam leap forward since their first album was uning 4-track recording) the sound is very murky and somewhat cloudy.
The album's closer, and show-stopper, is "The Knife", the hardest rocker on the album, which tells the story of a rebel leader willing to line his path to glory with the bodies of his supporters.

Ground and Sky review - Genesis - Trespass
This album is definitely a step in the prog direction, compared to the band's elevator music folk-rock debut.
However, for me, Trespass is arguably the Genesis album that hits the closest to the heart.
Anthony Phillips (his last album with the band), Mike Rutherford, and sometimes Tony Banks weave resplendent 12-string acoustic tapestries, interlocking effortlessly with the flute, organ, and piano.

Overall, the thing that immediately became obvious when playing the album the first time was the fact that this new album is a lot more darker and mysterious than the previous two albums, which tended to be quite lively.
The album comes to a close with Aftermath which is sadly overshadowed by White Glove, yet in itself possess some impressively dynamic contrasts with some delicate guitar solos accompanied by deep orchestral chords and percussion as the vocals are "relegated" to a narrative format which further adds to the depth and intensity of this piece.
Those familiar with the previous two album from Nathan Mahl are well aware that the only piece missing from the story is the actual sentencing of the subject of the story who has been accused of sorcery.

And I have a strong desire to say at the outset that Trespass is not only the best Israeli band (which is beyond any question), but also one of the best among those contemporary bands that perform Classic Symphonic Art-Rock.
The album is filled with a highly complex and intricate (often, simply mind-blowing), yet, at the same time, very intriguing progressive music from the first to the last note.
Back to the best four pieces on the album, most of those parts of them that reveal a pure Classical Music were also performed up-tempo, though, and often without drums.

Probably this album is the culmination of all progressive music (at least it's one of the 5 greatest albums ever made).
The album isn't bad, though, even the Banksballads have their moments, and I suppose some people says this is a masterpiece.
They really intended to make a good album, that's obvious: The songs are well-worked and suited so that they'll attract both their pop and their prog audience, though landing somewhere in between - there are some people who likes it, but those gotta be insane diehards or unexperienced pop fanatics.

It was one of the first commercial albums recorded entirely to digital tape (using a Sony mobile truck), and featured the early, extremely expensive Fairlight CMI sampling computer.
Gabriel toured extensively for each of his albums, continuing the dramatic shows he began with Genesis, often involving elaborate stage props and acrobatics which had him suspended from gantries, distorting his face with fresnel lenses and mirrors, and wearing unusual makeup.
The result was one of his most personal albums, followed by a world tour that consisted of two stages: a round one and a square one, united by a bridge that he crossed riding a boat.

In the 1970s, critics often derided prog as being pretentious, highlighting its excesses while ignoring its unique qualities.
Prog's often-inspired compositions and superior musicianship were not lost on the millions of fans scooping up albums like "Close to the Edge," "Trick of the Tail" and "Brain Salad Surgery."
