Abstract The diet of the bluenose or deepsea trevalla Hyperoglyphe porosa (Richardson) was determined from the stomach contents of 78 trevalla caught at five localities over the continental slope off south-eastern Australia (37-39° S, 142-151° E).
The pelagic tunicate Pyrosoma atlanticum Peron was the most common organism present, although squids, pelagic and benthic fishes, and crustaceans were found in the stomachs of some trevalla.
Trevalla are probably benthopelagic and feed mainly above the bottom during the day; at night they stop feeding and move to the bottom.

Blue eye trevalla have a dark blue body above and lighter blue below with a large eye.
Since hooked trevalla come from deep water there is little opportunity for the fish to fight and invariably their swim bladder expands when reaching the surface causing them to float.
These fish are the largest and possibly the best eating of all the fish caught in our region.

Six samples (n =67 to 154) of blue-eye or deepsea trevalla were collected from south-eastern Australia (seamounts off New South Wales, a seamount south-east of Tasmania called the Cascade Plateau, off the east, south and west coasts of Tasmania, and off the coast of South Australia).
All fish were analysed by starch or cellulose acetate electrophoresis for the products of seven polymorphic loci (defined in this study as those with an average heterozygosity greater than 0.06); a minimum of 24 fish per area were also analysed for 29 other less variable loci.
During the course of the study a second trevalla species, Schedophilus labyrinthicus, was identified in the New South Wales component of the fishery.
