This is especially true of Trevanian: he's a writer's writer.
The true genius of Trevanian is his ability to scold us as readers for swallowing their stories, while still producing a completley readable book.

At the same time, Trevanian now seems to be asking us to separate his mordant characters from their originator.

I recently read the novel "Shibumi" by this mysterious author (nobody seems to know for sure whether this author is male, female, or actually a group of people writing under a pseudonym), and I must say it is a classic, the best suspense novel I have read in a long time.
Trevanian's skills as a writer are tremendous: his (I'm assuming a gender here) characters are memorable, three-dimensional human beings, his humor is infectious and yet sharp as a razor, and his knowledge of his subject matters is second to none.

While I was reading Shibumi, I found it riveting...afterwards, I came to the conclusion that Trevanian was an arrogant SOB who I would be much better off never reading again.
The arrogant pretense perpetrated on the reader bothered me on a lot of levels until I reached an important conclusion: the author was just making this crap up and making me feel small to increase the relative scope of his work.
