Exeter News-Letter Sports: Exeter pulls away
In the end, though, it was Portsmouth that would be shut out, as the Blue Hawk offense proved too much for the hosts, scoring three times in each of the last two periods to win 6-0 and snap a two-game losing streak.
Cherry (47 saves) stopped 23 Blue Hawk bids in the initial frame alone, frustrating an aggressive Exeter attack as the teams skated to a scoreless draw after one.
Cherry held up under the 20-shot final period barrage, however, collecting 17 of his saves in the third.

The Leafs broke out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by forwards Gary Vorgity and Bobby Leavitt, but Boston surged back to tie it at 3-3 with less than six minutes remaining in the game on three scores by stalwart defenseman Simo Pulkki, sandwiched around an unassisted tally by Laconia’s Chamberlin.
But on one last rush for the Leafs and with Cherry out of the net, Laconia winger Matt McGilvray broke down left wing, shed a Boston defender, and feathered a pass to Chamberlin at the right post who easily tapped it by Blackhawks netminder Mark Holman (22 saves) for the tie.
