Trey Anastasio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anastasio was eventually suspended from college for an entire semester after he broke into the science building and stole a human hand and a goat's heart.
Anastasio has learned to tame this feedback and often used it to his advantage in the creation of psychedelic and other-worldly sounds onstage and in the studio ("The Squirming Coil", "The Divided Sky," and "You Enjoy Myself", to name a few, use this unique feedback in portions of the song).
Trey uses barre chords extensively, including open voicings of minor seventh, minor ninth, and minor thirteenth chords in addition to the sharp ninth chords associated with blues-based guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix.

Though Anastasio was nominally the leader of the project, he played as an equal member of a large group of downtown heavyweights.
The transformation of Anastasio's work from composition-based to improvisation-based was completed in 1997 and 1998 with The Story of the Ghost and The Siket Disc, two Phish releases chiseled out of hours of collective jamming overseen by producer John Siket.
Anastasio's ongoing collaboration with Tom Marshall also resulted in a bevy of new material, far too much for Phish to assimilate into their already gigantic live repertoire.

Anastasio waltzes into Spring 2002 with a solo album loaded with twelve tunes of sweeping beauty and graceful melodies, in advance of a national solo tour with his nine-piece back-up band.
Trey Anastasio begins with a catchy, summertime anthem ("Alive Again") and ends inconspicuously with the mellow "Ether Sunday." Sandwiched in between are tunes that range from cow funk to rural dixie.

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio's solo debut--not counting One Man's Trash, his limited-release odds-and-sods assortment--is the affable, something-for-everybody, more-or-less-mainstream album that the avant-arena rock quartet was always too collectively freaky to record together.
Trey has once again proven himself to be the musical genius that he is. Somehow, like all of Trey's previous efforts, he has managed to write yet another brilliant and entertaining yet still different sounding album.
Night Speaks sees Trey creep back out of his standard playing by using a more crunchy guitar tone that illustrates just how eclectic this album is. The supporting vocals and horns are all placed perfectly like a fine tuned orchestra, which is what we all know Trey is moving towards as his music grows.

Phish provided Anastasio with ample room to explore the arena space, however, he was never able to jam as hard and to the extent that he does during his solo performances.
With Anastasio on acoustic guitar and McConnell on keyboards, the two countered the rambunctious reaction caused by Page's appearance with a quiet, sweet encore of Phish songs consisting of "Strange Design," "Waves" and "Waste." Phish devotees incessantly shushed a restless minority during the pair’s charming, engaging set.
Rather than hold back Trey, or any other member of the band for that matter, Phish allowed each of them to stretch beyond comfortable limits and develop and explore diverse facets of their musical personas.

As one-fourth of Phish since 1983, Trey Anastasio has been known as a gifted guitarist whose dexterity was often undermined by the sprawling shapelessness of the band's songwriting and arrangements.
But since Phish went on sabbatical at the end of 2000, Anastasio has been working with a new band fueled by a blues-rock rhythm section and steered by a four-person horn section.
Those patterns are given flesh and muscle by the horns, and Anastasio responds to the structure with the most inventive, captivating guitar work of his career.

Freed from the sometimes corny playfulness of Phish, the world-class jam band who took up most of Trey Anastasio’s time before they went on what looks like being a prolonged hiatus back in 2000, the singer/guitarist gets serious about groove, mood, and songwriting on his solo debut.
With a brassy nine-piece band and interactive percussion, "Alive Again" and "Push On ’til the Day" conjure the romance, intrigue, and spiritual overtones of world-music exoticism without the clutter and cultural clashes that marred much of Paul Simon’s similarly conceived world-beat pop.
Anastasio gets looser and more experimental on the second half of the disc, splicing together live and studio recordings to create the greasy Band of Gypsies funk workout "Money, Love and Change." Dogs bark, water bubbles, melodies evaporate, and Anastasio’s cleverness unfurls in 11 minutes of blissfully aimless musical wanderings.
