  Triacs
The triac can be triggered by a gate-trigger pulse which is either positive or negative with respect to main terminal No.1 when main terminal No.2 is either positive or negative with respect to main terminal No. 1.
The triac, therefore, can be triggered in any of four operating modes, as summarized in Table I. The quadrant designations refer to the operating quadrant on the principal voltage-current characteristics (either I or III), and the polarity symbol represents the gate-to-main-terminal-No. 1 voltage.
For RCA triacs, the maximum trigger-current rating in the published data is the largest value of gate current that is required to trigger the selected device in any operating mode.

Control circuit for hospital bed - Patent 4044286
Gating of the gating triacs is achieved by an appropriate switching arrangement, which obtains a gating signal for the gating triacs from the secondary winding of the power transformer.
The number of power triacs employed will depend, of course, upon the number of functions to be achieved, but as this preferred embodiment relates to a bed having three movable portions, each of which is positionable in two directions, a total of six power triacs are employed.
The first terminals of triacs 35 and 36 are connected to the neutral side 25 of plug 21, while the first terminals of triacs 37-40 are connected to the hot side 23 of plug 21.

STMicroelectronics | IMPROVEMENT IN THE TRIAC COMMUTATION
The commutation problem of the triac In its electrical representation the triac can be compared to two thyristors mounted in anti-parallel and coupled with a control device which allows activation of this AC switch with only one gate (see Figure 1a).
The use of a triac without a snubber network The triac can thus be considered as a switch which turns off at the moment when the current is cut off in the dampened oscillating circuit constituted by the loads L and R and the internal capacity of the triac Ct (see Figure 6).
Logic Level triacs In this category we consider sensitive triacs in which the maximum gate current (IGT) is 5mA for the TW type and 10mA for the SW one.

 triacs and airflow
The heat dissipated by a triac is a result of the fact that semiconductors do not instantaneously turn on and turn off.
There are two thermodynamic behaviors here involved - the triac's heat attempting to reach equilibrium with the heat sink and the heat sink's absorbed heat trying to reach equilibrium with its ambient environment.
Triacs have 2 halves, each of which looks like a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR)and each of which conducts one half of the line cycle.

 Semiconductor relays
If the power generated by the triac is more than what the case itself can handle you must use a suitable heatsink (when installing heatsink rember that the triac case metal is live and it is usually a good idea to put some suitable electrical insulation between the heatsink and the triac case).
For example for 10A triac circuit (2300V at 230V mains voltage) a 10 cm of 25 x 40 mm aluminium L-profile bolted to triac and circuit board is adequate.
The resistor R3 and capacitor C1 are for snubbing of the triac and may or may not be necessary depending upon the particular triac and load used.

The World Market for Thyristors, Diacs and Triacs
This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for thyristors, diacs, and triacs excluding photosensitive devices.
The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across country markets and projects these to the current year.
Combined, Chapters 3 and 4 present the complete picture for imports and exports of thyristors, diacs, and triacs excluding photosensitive devices to and from all major countries in the world.

DC Switching circuit - Patent 4394682
Triacs, such as those used in the triac strings, are three-terminal devices which switch to a conductive state in response to the application of a signal to a gate terminal and remain in this conductive state until the gate signal is removed and the conducted current falls below a minimum holding current level.
This causes the triacs to revert to their non-conductive state unless another pulse is applied to the gate of the triacs.
The conducting triac string is returned to its non-conductive state during this delay time in response to the signal B decaying to a voltage insufficient to gate the selected triac string.

STMicroelectronics | ST6 - MICROCONTROLLER (MCU) AND TRIACS ON THE MAINS (110/220V)
The +5V is referred to anode 1 of the triac in o r d e r to provide the negative gate current necessary to drive the triac in quadrants QII a n d QIII.
As a result, the triac is driven symmetrically in both phases so that continuous voltage in the transformer is avoided and noise in the transformer is reduced.
Otherwise, the voltage across the triac is monitored to detect a spurious open load condition at the seco ndary of the transformer.

Ortech Engineering TRIACS Family   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
The OEI TRIACS products are a family of compact analog and digital I/O modules that are simple and economical to install in any control system environment where distributed I/O is desirable.
The first TRIACS modules were introduced to the petrochemical industry in 1983 to significantly reduce the installation costs of a control system by eliminating the massive wiring normally required for conventional systems.
In contrast, only a 4-wire power/data bus is required for the TRIACS system with very minimal local wiring between the individual modules and their control points or sensors.

STMicroelectronics | NEW TRIACS: IS THE SNUBBER CIRCUIT NECESSARY?
At turn off the commutation of the triac is the transient phase during which the load current is passing through zero and the supply voltage is reapplied to the triac terminals.
In application the dIT/dt through the triac is not adjustable because it is given by the circuit (Va and L); its measure permits the choice of this triac with the commutation parameter, (dI/dt)c.
We could add a saturable inductor in series with the triac when L is too low: particularly this is the case of resistive load.

Triac Based Light Controller   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
I could have used relays to control my lights, but triacs seemed like a more sensible solution as they react quicker and are totally silent as they contain no mechanical parts.
The triacs I used were also isolated tab, which means that you don't need any form of isolation between the triac and the heatsink.
Be aware that on a standard triac one of the legs will be connected to the casing of the triac, and therefore I always recommend isolated tab.
