Slant Magazine - Music Review: Trial By Fire: Ringing In The Dawn
Trial By Fire is a blender that purees elements from the last 20 years of punk onto a record that sounds superb (as do most things coming out of Brian McTernan's studio these days).
Unlike most punk bands, Trial By Fire is often critical of its rebel comrades rather than the establishment.
Trial By Fire, like its logo (torch constructed of a flame sitting atop the stars and bars of their hometown District of Columbia flag), is both the inferno of current destruction and a spark of hope for change ahead.

Trial By Fire, was the final album with lead vocalist Steve Perry.
The album is filled with great rockers that emulate the "Escape" album, very edgy tunes that are reminescent of "Frontiers," and beautifully written ballads that demonstrate that Journey still has a sentimental side.

"Trial By Fire" Album Review -- USPFC's On-Line Album Review: Trial By Fire
There are positive points and negative points to everything in life, and Journey's reunion album, "Trial By Fire," is no exception.
Track fourteen, "Trial By Fire," is a pretty good title track for this album; although, even though it's good, because of the ballads that precede it, it seems watered down by now.
The only thing going for it is that it has some jazzy guitar on the "Trial By Fire track," the beginning of the album rocks you into the mood, and it's a nice farewell to frontman, Steve Perry's, twenty-year Journey with the group.

Released in April 1975, the debut Journey album rampaged on a fiery instrumental sound interspersed with a few vocals by Rolie, a superbly proficient musicianly performance built on dense chords and complex time changes.
Included on this album were the singles "Only the Young" and "Ask the Lonely," both of which were soundtrack themes and had been removed from the Frontiers lineup before that album was released.
This album offered the group's first song ever to be nominated for a grammy award, "When You Love A Woman," and several rockers, "Message Of Love," "Can't Tame the Lion," and "Castles Burning," with the rest of the 14 track album being filled out with ballads and a catchy regae-ish toon.

 RockNet Review "Trial By Fire"
After Journey's moderately successful "Frontiers" album of 1983, the band mutually agreed to call it quits to pursue their own interests.
But now with the re-addition of Valory and Smith, a certain chemistry has apparently returned bringing "Trial By Fire" a new look and sound for the band while remaining true to some of the Journey trademarks of the past which made them so popular.
But this album by no means is a rehash of old Journey sounds and themes.

"Trial By Fire" won't change the mind of anyone who thought Journey a polished but hollow hit machine.
