Triana is designed to measure ozone and cloud distributions to enhance studies of their effects on climate and the amount of UV radiation that reaches the ground.
Perhaps Triana's most important contribution to Earth science observations is the potential for using L1 observations of Earth to integrate data from multiple spaceborne as well as surface and airborne observation platforms into a self-consistent global database for studying the planet and documenting the extent of regional and global change.
Triana at the L1 view also has the potential to provide atmospheric observations (particularly of ozone) at a finer temporal and spatial resolution for a larger portion of the globe than can currently be obtained from either LEO or GEO.

Triana's Scripps-EPIC instrument will serve as an important complement to the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instruments on other Earth science satellites, providing data on the full sunrise to sunset changes in ozone, clouds, and aerosol amounts that influence not only climate but also the amount of UV radiation reaching the surface.
Triana's Scripps-EPIC instrument will be the first to combine visible and UV viewing channels, enabling scientists to derive measures of particle size distributions as well as aerosol optical depth.
Triana's Plasma-Mag instrument suite is an advanced, smaller version of the ACE instrumentation, and should arrive at L1 in time to continue this valuable service.

TRIANA started as a concept to obtain frequent Earth images of clouds and their motions from the Lagrange-1 point at 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth between the Earth and the Sun.
The Triana mission had an extremely short development time, starting in November 1998, with instrument delivery in early 2001, and scheduled shuttle launch during the last quarter of that year (now delayed).
Using 10 wavelength channels from UV to near IR (317 to 870 nm), Triana is designed to obtain daily global images of ozone, aerosols, water vapor, cloud cover, cloud height, and vegetation information.

Due to the nature of the data, each frame or snap shot is a representation at a particular point in time of the total data set, it is possible to distribute a time slice or frame over a number of processes and calculate the different views based on the point of view in parallel.
The loaded data is then separated into frames, distributed amongst the various Triana servers distributed on the available network and processed to calculate the column density using smooth particle hydrodynamics.
A Triana visualisation unit on the users local machine is used to control the entire process and run the animation once the processing is complete.
