Triangulation (chess) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Triangulation is a tactic used in chess endgames to put one's opponent in zugzwang.
Thus, if one king triangulates by using three moves to return to the original square and the opposing king can't do the same, he has lost a crucial tempo and gained the opposition (and see Chess strategy and tactics).
Triangulation is also called losing a tempo or losing a move (Flear, 2004:15).

Triangulation (taking two moves to reach a square you could have moved to in one move) is an important concept in king and pawn endgames, and is an excellent introduction to triangles and timing.
Chess has French words such as en passant (in passing), and en prise (in a position to be taken).

Lev Alburt vs Garry Kasparov (1978)
In essence, the triangulation maneuver allows fl to "burn a tempo." Thus fl is creating a chance to get back to the starting position of kings at f1 and e4, but this time with white to move.
Once you realize that, then the triangulation maneuver is used to create an opportunity to return to the starting puzzle position, but this time with white forced to make the first move.
The purpose of triangulation is to give the move to the opponent and is of significance only in zugzwang positions.

Modest Proposals - MOVEMENT RULE Variants
Standard chess Knights are assumed to leap first along the rank or file and then diagonally, and therefore displaced friendly units along the rank or file.
In a "triangulation" maneuver chessman "A" moves to a square occupied by chessman "B", with chessman "B" then moving to a square occupied by chessman "C" and chessman "C" then placed on the square initially vacated by chessman "A".
A pawn may not be "triangulated" to the player's own back rank, but it may be promoted during triangulation, in which case the promoted piece takes the pawn’s place in the sequence.

Pawns may suddenly appear on the seventh rank and promote to queen on their next move, checkmates may be accomplished via an overwhelming combination of pieces, etc. A win is accomplished by checkmating first on either board, or by winning on time (one of the opponent's flags falls first).
In this situation the enemy pawn is allowed by chess rules to capture the en passant pawn as if it had only advanced one square, but this may only occur on the opponent's next move.
