Triarii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To be the officer of the triarii was an honor.
Triarii were sometimes, not unlike the Principes, divided into ten maniples of 160 men.
If the initial attacks of the javelin- and sword- armed troops could not break an enemy, the Triarii served as a strong point around which the army would regroup (in the same manner as in much later centuries squares of musketmen were to provide a defensive screen for reforming cavalrymen).

When the Principes and Hastati of Republican army were rearmed with javelins, the Triarii retained their long spears and scutums and continued to fight as a phalanx.

The triarii were veterans and still much looked and functioned like the heavily armed hoplites of the old Greek phalanx.
Behind the principes knelt a few yards back, the triarii who, if the heavy infantry was pushed back, would charge forward with their spears, shocking the enemy with suddenly emerging new troops and enabling the principes to regroup.
The triarii were generally understood as the last defence, behind which the hastati and principes could retire, if the battle was lost.

The heavy cavalry and triarii were to guard the flanks until sufficient damage had been done to the enemy to cause them to reach their break point.
This meant the triarii and Roman cavalry would fight Pyrrhus and his companions, before the flank charge of the light infantry peltasts into the Roman cavalry would be fought.
The triarii fresh into the melee caused the last break point on Pyrrhus, the light infantry flank charge would not be fought and nether would the cavalry to cavalry melee.

The Triarii were armed with the Roman equivalent of the phalanx style spear, the Hastae.
If the heavy infantry were pushed back, the Triarii would charge forward with their spears, hopefully with the effect of shocking the enemy and allowing the Princeps and Hastati time to regroup.
