Topic: Triathlon bars

Triathlon bars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Triathlon bars is a catch-all term referring to various styles of aerodynamic handlebars for racing bicycles.
Included are narrow, bolt on extensions that draw the body forward into a tucked position, bull horn bars that spread the arms of the rider but drops their torso into a slightly lower position, and integrated units that combine elements of both designs.
Triathlon bars are commonly used in triathlons and time trial events on road and track.

Triathlons are completed over various distances ranging from 1 hour events to all day races.
Triathlon is a new sport to the Australian Institute of Sport and is based jointly between Canberra and the Gold Coast.
In most triathlons, drafting (riding directly behind or beside a fellow competitor) during the cycle leg is prohibited as this provides a 10-15% advantage to the athlete drafting.

Track cycling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bicycles are designed to reduce aerodynamic drag caused by the machine itself and the rider's racing position.
Often riders will use triathlon bars designed to allow the rider to extend their arms in front of their body which leans forward almost to the horizontal so as to present the minimum frontal area and thus reducing drag.
These triathlon bars or 'aerobars' are often bolted on to traditional drop bars or more aerodynamic bull horn bars.

Bicycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the late 1990s, disc brakes appeared on some off-road bicycles, tandems and recumbent bicycles, but are considered impractical on road bicycles, which rarely encounter conditions where the advantages of discs are significant.
Triathlon bicycles have seat posts that are closer to vertical than the seat posts on road racing bicycles.
Triathlon bicycles also have specialized handlebars known as triathlon bars or aero bars.

 Stepping up to the bar
Although the use of aero' bars has spread beyond the world of triathlon, they are firmly entrenched in triathlon culture and lore.
Aero' bars achieve a more aerodynamic position by placing the upper body of the rider in a lower position, with their arms extended out in front of the body.
Your aero' bars should be fit to you and your bike when you purchase the bike, to ensure that they put you in the proper position.

What Is the Difference between a Road Bike and a Triathlon Bike?
As important is that the rider’s upper body is supported by the skeleton while using aero bars (resting on the elbows), while with the standard road, drop handlebars, a rider must rely on the use of upper body muscles to support their body and maintain the riding posture.
Triathlon frames are at their best when riding on flat to rolling terrain (like most of Michigan, Northern Ohio, Indiana and Illinois), where there is no need for high speed cornering, and where the cyclist will not be relying on other riders to draft off of.
Triathlon frames are not intended for use in group rides where drafting at close proximity and lightening fast handling are important.

The geometry of triathlon frames enables a cyclist to maintain a low, narrow posture for extended periods of time and ease the transition from the cycling posture to running.
This may be a result of the handlebar stem being too long and the aero bars too far away from the saddle.
If you decide to forego a triathlon specific geometry frame in favor of retrofitting a standard geometry road bike for use with aero bars, you may experience better results than with a standard road bike.

Also of interest is that the aero bars being ridden by all the bicyclists in the Tour were originally developed for the sport of triathlon.
Some triathlon specific suits come with a chamois or pad in the crotch area but in a short race such as Firebird this is usually not necessary.
Aero bars are probably the single most important piece of equipment to add to your bike.

Although there is no doubt that aero' bars have their place in cycling, there are times when their use needs to be avoided.
Generally this means that aero' bars should not be used when riding in a group or on bumpy terrain where it easy to lose control, and your reactions compromise other person's safety.
Additionally, it is important to train on your aero' bars for the time, intensity, and terrain that your race requires so that your muscles are specifically prepared for what they will face on race day.

It should be noted, however, that they are illegal in most mass start road races because, while aerodynamicallyadvantageous, they tend to draw the hands away from brakes and make the rider slightly more unstable on the bike.

 Tri Bike Fit
The problem with sticking full tri bars on your “perfectly fit” road race bike is that the bike is too long for these bars or, if you prefer, the clip-ons are too long for the bike.
The good thing about these bars is that they’ll allow you to achieve that 90-degree shoulder angle without changing the fit and set-up on your road bike.
With road race riding, there are a lot of road bars out there, but from a positioning perspective a bar's a bar.
