  Britain.tv Wikipedia - Destroyer
Modern destroyers are equivalent in tonnage but drastically superior in firepower to cruisers of the World War II era, capable of carrying nuclear missiles able to destroy cities in a very small volley.
Destroyers were involved in the skirmishes that prompted the Battle of Heligoland Bight, and filled a range of roles in the Battle of Gallipoli, acting as troops transports and fire support vessels, as well as their fleet-screening role.
The destroyers (as well as frigates) are, as always, the workhorses of the fleet, the former optimised for air defence and the latter for surface and subsurface warfare.

The Tribal class, or Afridi class, were a large group of destroyers built for the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Australian Navy that saw action in World War II.
The Tribals were so much larger and sufficiently different than the rest of the British destroyers in service that some consideration was given to ressurecting the classification of corvette and applying it to them.

The first effective design of a torpedo boat destroyer emerged in 1885 with the Japanese Kotaka ("Falcon"), which "was the forerunner of torpedo boat destroyers that appeared a decade later" (Kaigun, David C. Evans).
Destroyer construction continued during the inter-war period, initially with designs evolved from the British V and W Class.
A major innovation came with the Japanese Fubuki class destroyers or special type of 1928, which introduced enclosed turrets capable of anti-aircraft fire and the 24-inch (60 cm) oxygen fuelled Type 93 torpedo.

The first ships to bear the formal designation "Torpedo boat destroyer" were the Havock class of two ships of the Royal Navy, developed in 1892 under the newly appointed Third Sea Lord Rear Admiral "Jackie" Fisher, and launched in 1893.
German destroyers also used innovative high-pressure steam machinery: while this should have helped their efficiency, it more often resulted in mechanical problems.
The British realising the need for heavier gun armament built the Tribal class of 1936 (sometimes called "Afridi" after one of two lead ships) these ships displaced 1850 tons and was armed with eight 4.7-inch guns in four twin turrets and four torpedo tubes.

During WWII the Destroyer was still primarily a combined gun and torpedo armed ship, although used at first for convoy escort they were considered too valuable as Fleet escorts for this role and so the specialised escort vessels were introduced to relieve them of these duties.
The Hunt class destroyer designed prior to WWII was a scaled down destroyer specifically for convoy escort duties, the main difference between the Black Swan and the Hunt was speed, the Hunt destroyer had a 10 Knot advantage over the Black Swan.
Destroyers in particular from the First World War tended to be classed by letter for each "run" of building, the letter was incremented in much the same way as car registration plates are.

The Type 81, or Tribal class, was a class of seven general-purpose frigates for the Royal Navy designed during the 1950s that served throughout the 1960s and 1970s with limited service during the 1980s.
The Tribals were designed during the 1950s due to the increasing cost of having single-role vessels such as the Type 14s.
The class were still good warships despite their cost, proving the usefulness of the general purpose frigate concept, as perfected in the excellent Type 12M Leander class and modern Type 23 class.

Khazars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the collapse of the Gokturk empire due to internal conflict in the seventh century, the western half of the Turk empire split into a number of tribal confederations, among whom were the Bulgars, led by the Dulo clan, and the Khazars, led by the Ashina clan, the traditional rulers of the Gok Turk empire.
Ibn Fadlan relates that around 920 the Khazar ruler received information that Muslims had destroyed a synagogue in the land of Babung, in Iran; he gave orders that the minaret of the mosque in his capital should be broken off, and the muezzin executed.
He further declared that he would have destroyed all the mosques in the country had he not been afraid that the Muslims would in turn destroy all the synagogues in their lands.

The Tribal class destroyers trace their roots to 1934 when the British Admiralty evaluated the threat posed by much larger destroyers being built in Japan, Italy and even Germany than the Royal Navy had.
The first 7 Tribals were ordered on 10 March, 1936 with the latter group of 9 Tribals being ordered on 9 June.
The original Tribals were a batch of twelve ships built for the Royal Navy in 1905 - 1908 and were the forerunners of the Modern Class of Royal Navy destroyers.

The destroyers' torpedoes had eliminated roughly three-quarters of the firepower of Force C, as well as damaging the Yamashiro with at least one (and probably three) hits.
