The late Dr Shambu Lal Shrestha, recipient of the original TDR grant in 1978, was responsible for these activities and for obtaining an institution strengthening grant from TDR in 1991, initially to support malaria research but later targeted on kala azar.
Recent TDR involvement in Nepal also includes two Research Capability Strengthening (RCS) grants to the Institute of Medicine that have supported former research training grant (RTG) recipients to continue their research efforts, develop an independent research career and facilities, and further develop local human resources.
There is now a strong feeling in Nepal that a network needs to be established among local researchers in order to build on what has been achieved over the last ten years.
