Triboelectric effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The triboelectric effect is a type of contact electrification in which certain materials become electrically charged after coming into contact with another, different, material, and are then separated.
The polarity and strength of the charges produced differ according to the materials, surface roughness, temperature, strain, and other properties.
The triboelectric effect is only related to friction because they both involve adhesion.

With this carrier, however, the charge-endowing property of the upper triboelectricity controlling layer is allowed to be prevailing at a comparatively early stage of service life, while the charge-endowing property of the lower triboelectricity controlling layer is allowed to develop far later (i.e.
In summary, the charge-endowing property of the carrier described in the above-mentioned patent publication varies depending on a type of the resin of the triboelectricity controlling layer (intermediate layer), and is unsatisfactory as a carrier for use with the toner particles that incorporate, as a binder, a resin exhibiting a strong negative-charge endowing property, e.g.

Triboelectricity occurs when two materials collide or are rubbed together, causing a transfer of charge from one material to another.
Because the current is related to particulate flow activity, triboelectricity presents a novel means of monitoring dry solids flow.
This article discusses the historical research and practical use of triboelectric technology as a dry solids flow measurement parameter.

When a small amount of a fumaric ester is added to styrene in accordance with the present invention, the hygroscopicity is reduced and as a result, variations in the triboelectricity of a toner are reduced so that marks of uniform quality can always be obtained even under high-humidity conditions.
The triboelectricity was measured both at the beginning and after continuous copying of 10,000 copies.

The Triboelectric Series of Materials Causing Static Electricity - Succeed in Physical Science
Since static electricity is the collection of electrically charged particles on the surface of a material, various materials have a tendency of either giving up electrons and becoming positive (+) in charge or attracting electrons and becoming negative (-) in charge.
The Triboelectric Series is a list of materials, showing which have a greater tendency to become positive (+) and which have a greater tendency to become negative (-).
The Triboelectric Series is a list of materials, showing the relative tendency to become charged.

The EP300 has a unique method to detect dust particles, through the physical phenomenon of triboelectricity: When two different materials come into contact, that is to say they rub against each other, it is likely that one will attract more electrons than the other.
Triboelectricity has been used for more than twenty years, to determine dust emissions.
The monitors use the triboelectric effect: when particles come into contact with the sensor probe a small amount of electrical charge is transferred and then converted to a dust emission signal.

The positively charged glass rod and the negatively charged hard rubber rod can then be used (1) simply to illustrate that electrical charge exists using an electroscope or (2) to perform other electrostatics experiments.
The Demonstration Reference File contains a list, known as the "triboelectric series" which indicates the tendency of materials to become either positively or negatively charged when they are rubbed on (contact) each other.

Tribology or friction control are extremely important in modern engineering and physics
triboelectric, an electrical charge produced by friction between two objects; such as, rubbing silk on a glass surface.
triboelectricity, in physics, electrical charges produced by friction between two surfaces; static electricity.
The term “frictional electricity”; gave way to “triboelectricity,” although since “tribo” means “to rub,” the newer term does little to change the concept.

The principle behind most Van de Graaf generators is generation of charge on the belt by triboelectricity --- dissimilar materials can strip electrons from one material by coming into contact and "peeling" apart.
This is very similar to rubbing a balloon on your hair and sticking it to a wall.
Whatever the materials for rubbing, if they are dissimilar and far enough apart in the "triboelectric series", charge will be separated, creating the fields, ionizing the air and transferring charge to the belt.

Electricity builds up on surfaces as a result of friction (triboelectricity) from airborne particles, such as the dust stirred up by helicopters or rocket exhaust, or it builds up as the result of receiving charge from another source, such as lightning.

In addition, their work added considerably to the body of knowledge of triboelectricity and its effects.

Dust devils, in particular, are known to have distinct meteorological (fluid) signatures, including cyclonic winds and thermally-hot centers.
However, in arid environments, wind and dust also produce electricity through a process call “triboelectricity”, where mixing dust and sand grains of different composition and size both generate and exchange electric charge upon collision.
In this presentation, we will discuss the micro-physics of triboelectricity, and describe applications of this charging process to large coherent convective structures such as dust devils and dust storms.

All of our detectors and monitors measure the triboelectric effect that occurs when particles impact or closely pass by our probe.
Triboelectricity is a natural phenomenon which simply put is the transfer of electrical charge between the particles and our probe.
Over twenty years of experience has shown that there is a direct correlation between the signal strength and the concentration of dust in a pipe or duct when the velocity is relatively constant and the material being monitored is the same.

Additionally to triboelectricity aircraft receive the electrical charge of the atmosphere, which is a natural event of approximately 100,000 Volt at 10,000 meters altitude (the normal flying height for commercial jet aircraft).
The atmosphere at this altitude carries a positive charge, due to the electrical field that exists between the Earth and the ionosphere.
To try to overcome the static electricity problem on an aircraft, metal rods are fitted on the wings to discharge the aircraft.

The lightning page explains producing/separating electric charge by triboelectricity process among ice particles (or dust).
But the triboelectricity page (and the Van de Graaff page), says that the rubbing particles must be of different material to produce/separate electrical charge.
If so, the ice particles (or dust) being of the same material could not produce static electricity.

The reason why you don't get that high voltages is that there are limiting factors like air ionisation.

Re: Can rocky islands be electric after vulcanic eruptions
Large bodies of rock are still slipping and sliding and straining deep underground.
This can lead to electricity generation in two ways: triboelectricity from the friction of the actual sliding contact of the rocks, or piezoelectricity from the straining of some minerals -- particularly, but not exclusively, quartz crystal or tourmaline.
The third possibility is a different sort of triboelectricity.

 Some thoughts on music cables
Because they're high power, interference and hum are very small by comparison, so the wires can be unshielded, and triboelectricity is not a problem.
However, speaker wires are often run for long distances, so capacitance can be a problem, because it can cause the amplifier to oscillate at supersonic frequencies and destroy either itself or the speaker.
But also, the high impedance means that triboelectric signals, which would get drained away by low impedance, can be a problem: when you wiggle the instrument cable you can hear noise from your amp.

Amber was the first material discovered to be triboelectric.
Thales of Miletus is traditionally regarded as the first to mention amber's ability to attract light dry objects, but the evidence is a bit thin: Diogenes Laertius cites Aristotle and Hippias as reporting that, on the basis of the examples of lodestone and amber, Thales attributed souls to lifeless things.
It begins ``Head bangers in [the excellent triboelectric material] leather / Sparks flyin' in the dead of the night [best time to observe them]'' and goes on to introduce the topics of lighting, power, and overload -- all standard topics in a sound electrical engineering curriculum.
