Topic: Tribology

Tribology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tribology is the science and technology of friction, lubrication, and wear, derived from the Greek tribo meaning "I rub".
The study of tribology is commonly applied in bearing design - but extends into other almost any aspect of modern technology, even to such unlikely areas as hair conditioners and cosmetics [lipstick, powders, gloss].
Several national centres for tribology were created in the UK as a result.

Tribology has been a significant research area in the Woodruff School for over two decades.
The initial interests of the Tribology Group were in the study of the sliding and rolling of the concentrated contacts that occur in rolling element bearings, cams, and gears.
The work carried out by the Tribology Group is of a basic nature, leading to an understanding of the complex tribological reactions that occur in the microcosm of the real areas of contact and thin lubricating films between surfaces in relative motion.

 Tribology
The phenomena considered in tribology are among the most fundamental and most common of those encountered by humans in interaction with their largely solid environment.
Tribology is therefore receiving increasing attention, as it has become evident that the waste of resources resulting from high friction and wear is very great (more than 6% of the Gross National Product [GNP]).
To compound the problem, coverage of tribology in most reference works is insufficient or outdated and provides little guidance to those involved in construction and design of new mechanisms.

Tribology is a fascinating research subject as many times the results of the research through experiments in tribo testing machines are seen quickly.
This demand for tribology can be created by individuals, but only in small measures; the societies like TSI can certainly make a better impact by encouraging multidisciplinary groups to work in the field of tribology.
Nano tribology in short has brought the scale of interest, familiar in physics and chemistry, to the level of engineering phenomena in this new framework are being investigated while new solutions are being found.

 Tribology
Tribology comprises the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion; that is, friction, lubrication and wear.
Tribology is a vast and interdisciplinary subject, ranging from the fundamental physics of surface contact and adhesion to the application of advanced materials and lubricants to solve practical industrial friction and wear problems.
Experiments are designed to screen materials, effect simulations of components, or study the basic relationships between the microstructures and compositions of surfaces and their friction and wear behavior.

 Tribology
The Tribology Section conducts research on advanced tribological systems (e.g., surface engineered materials, lubricants, fuels, and fuel/lubricant additives) for use in aggressive environments.
The overall goal of the Tribology Section is to promote industrial competitiveness by developing new tribological technologies and by solving problems associated with friction, wear, and lubrication.
The major strength of the Section lies in its ability to not only develop processes to form novel coatings that are lubricious and wear-resistant, but more important, to perform detailed evaluation of the tribological properties of materials and coatings under a wide range of conditions that simulate those found in various energy-intensive sectors.

 2004 GRC on Tribology
As unsung as its critical underlying influence may currently seem, today's challenges for Tribology are just as great as during the industrial revolution or during the 19th and 20th Centuries.
Indeed, Tribology has the potential to impact positively on all aspects of our health, wealth and quality of life including how we generate and conserve energy and improving the mobility of our disabled or elderly citizens.
It has long been recognised that Tribology is an interdisciplinary area not only spanning science, engineering and technology but bridging disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials engineering and social sciences (where we need to address the social, legal and economic issues involved with either technological change or technology insertion).
