Trichomonas vaginalis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trichomonas vaginalis, an anaerobic, parasitic flagellated protozoan, is the causative agent of trichomoniasis, and is the most common pathogenic protozoan infection of humans in industrialized countries.
vaginalis obtains nutrients by transport through the cell membrane and by phagocytosis.
The organism is able to maintain energy requirements by the use of a small amount of enzymes to provide energy via glycolysis of glucose to glycerol and succinate in the cytoplasm, followed by further conversion of pyruvate and malate to hydrogen and acetate in an organelle called the hydrogenosome.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a common cause of the infection of the female genital tract and trichomoniasis is recognized as a major sexually transmitted disease, while the Tritrichomonas foetus is responsible for the genital bovine urogenital trichomoniasis.
It is possible that the hemolytic activity remains in the dependence of parasitic and erythrocytic cell surface receptors which probably carry mannose, because this activity is strongly reduced by pre-treatment of the parasites with Con A. These data suggest the intervention of the cell surface receptors as a mechanism of the hemolytic activity.
