Trichuriasis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trichuriasis is a parasitic disease caused by infection of the large intestine by a parasite whipworm (Trichuris trichiura).
Trichuriasis is common worldwide (in particular among countries with warm, humid climates) and primarily affects children, who may become infected if they ingest soil contaminated with whipworm eggs.
The ingested eggs hatch, and the whipworm embeds in the wall of the large intestine (cecum, colon, rectum).

Roundworm infections   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Trichuriasis, caused by Trichuris trichiura, is sometimes called whipworm because the organism has a long, slender, whiplike front end.
Patients with trichuriasis or ascariasis should be examined for signs of infection by other roundworm species; many patients are infected by several parasites at the same time.
Trichuriasis, ascariasis, and toxocariasis can be prevented by keeping children from playing in soil contaminated by human or animal feces; by teaching children to wash their hands before eating; and by having pets dewormed regularly by a veterinarian.

Trichuriasis in a 7 year-old San Salvador boy with profuse rectal bleeding.
Air contrast examination of the colon, including the spot film of the rectosigmoid colon shown here, identifies the typical wavy outlines of innumerable trichurids; some are tightly coiled in a "target" pattern typical of male parasites, whereas others are unfurled in the curvilinear configuration of female trichurids.

Veterans who are former prisoners of war are entitled to a rebuttable presumption of service connection for helminthiasis, which includes both ascariasis and trichuriasis, if it becomes manifest to a degree of 10 percent or more at any time after the veteran's military service ended.
The most closely analogous disease which is rated in the schedule seems to be intestinal distomiasis, for which mild symptoms warrant a noncompensable rating, and moderate symptoms warrant a 10 percent rating.
We therefore find that the veteran has never had symptoms of ascariasis or trichuriasis which are moderately disabling, warranting a rating of 10 percent or more.

Consequently, the RO assigned a 20 percent evaluation for a duodenal bulb deformity from a previous ulcer disease with intestinal ankylostomiasis and trichuriasis under the provisions of 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.114, Diagnostic Code 7305.
It has not been shown that the veteran's duodenal bulb deformity from a previous ulcer disease with intestinal ankylostomiasis and trichuriasis has caused marked interference with employment or necessitated frequent periods of hospitalization so as to render impractical the application of the regular schedular standards.

Trichuriasis (whipworm) affects especially children 5 to 10 years old.
Light infections are generally asymptomatic, whereas moderate infections may cause epigastric or lower abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, or nausea and vomiting.
The diagnosis of trichuriasis is established by finding characteristic barrel-shaped, twin plugged eggs in stool.

In ascariasis, adult worms may appear in the patient's feces or vomit and can also be detected by x ray and ultrasound tests.
Patients with trichuriasis or ascariasis should be examined for signs of infection by other roundworm species, as well, as many patients are infected by several parasites at the same time.
Trichuriasis, ascariasis, and toxocariasis are treated with anthelminthic medications--drugs that destroy roundworms either by paralyzing them or by blocking them from feeding.

THE MERCK MANUAL--SECOND HOME EDITION, Whipworm Infection in Ch. 196, Parasitic Infections
Whipworm infection (trichuriasis) is an intestinal infection caused by the roundworm Trichuris trichiura.
Trichuriasis is a very common disorder, occurring mainly in the subtropics and tropics, where poor sanitation and a warm, moist climate provide the conditions needed for Trichuris eggs to incubate in the soil.
A doctor bases a diagnosis of trichuriasis on seeing the typical barrel-shaped eggs in stool samples examined under a microscope or occasionally by observing adult worms during a colonoscopy.

Trichuriasis is infection of the human cecum, appendix, colon and rectum by the whipworm, Trichuris trichiura.
In the United States, where 2 to 3 million persons are infected, trichuriasis has a spotty distribution, being prevalent chiefly in the southern Appalachian Mountains and in rural Louisiana, where fecal pollution, dense shade near the house, and heavy rainfall favor its propagation.
In Brazil, it is the commonest parasite in the large cities (with an incidence of up to 40%).

Stool specimens of 104 primary schoolchildren (mean+/-SD age = 8.2+/-0.3 years) were examined for helminth eggs and for occult blood to investigate the possibility that trichuriasis causes occult intestinal bleeding in the absence of the overt Trichuris dysentery syndrome.
Serial stool occult blood testing on the 11 subjects with heavy trichuriasis and 8 uninfected controls yielded a single weakly positive result in the control group.
The results provide no evidence that trichuriasis predisposes to significant occult gastrointestinal bleeding in children in the absence of the dysenteric syndrome.

During this investigation they made an unexpected finding: multiple doses of albendazole, a widely-used de-worming drug, appears to impair growth of children with low levels of infection.
The researchers found that symptomless trichuriasis does indeed impair growth and that multiple-dose albendazole reduced the intensity of whipworm infestation by 99 percent, compared with reductions of 87 percent and 67 percent with the single-dose albendazole and pyrantel regimens, respectively.
In children with the heaviest infestations, this multiple-dose regimen led to improvements in growth.

Humans worldwide are infected with Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura; the eggs of these roundworms (nematode) are "sticky" and may be carried to the mouth by hands, other body parts, fomites (inanimate objects), or foods.
Infected foodhandlers may contaminate a wide variety of foods.
These infections are cosmopolitan, but ascariasis is more common in North America and trichuriasis in Europe.
