One of the earliest, general references to card tricks is an article from 1408 which tells of a card cheat in Paris who sought to gain advantage by manipulating the cards he was playing.

This book encyclopedia of card tricks is meant to be a compnaion to royal road, "not a subtitute or replacement for it".
The tricks are described in no more than one page and the tricks provided are very simplistic with many tricks being repeated with just different patter etc.
A rather impressive collection of tricks from experts such as Jordan and Vernon, although I must admit that it is not my favourite book of card ticks.

As they place their finger there, palm the top card off and ask,"What was your card?" After their response (which you've heard already), put your hand in your pocket and remove the Ace.
After they tell me the selected card's name, I look through the deck of coins and state that the selected card is not in the deck and that they must have put it into the deck in my pocket, and by making a mistake like that they probably put it in reversed.

I fear that placing a card or cards on the spectator's hand will tempt them to grab at it and look at it prematurely.
By casually waving the spread packet in a circular motion, the red card apparently travels to the middle of the packet and then back to the bottom from where it is remove.
