Trick (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trick (1999) is an American gay comedy movie directed by Jim Fall.
This movie appeared at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals in 1999.
It was sharply criticized for its implausibility (in New York, locations for quick sex are not hard to find) and off-topic segments (as with entire audition sequences notably replete with B-level acting talent).

 Political Film Society - Trick
The tagline of the film is "A story about two guys trying to make it in the big city." Gabriel, a budding writing of musicals in New York with "all American boy" looks, shares a one-room apartment in West Village with a straight roommate.
For the rest of the film the audience is on edge as one thing after another intervenes to prevent the two from having sex together.
Trick seems to follow a formula found in some gay films of those in their 20s: The major hero is gentle and kind but inexperienced, refusing to be overwhelmed by the complexities and uncertainties of gay life, whereas straights tend to be insensitive and narcissistic, a view that is widely shared within the gay community.

The film itself is a study, the gamut of ego of a woman and how it brings about her suicide is a beautiful study.
The range of emotions she portrays in all the films are lessons in acting for students in acting.
Falling between a feature film and a documentary, subtle acting versus loud and blaring music, the film could be a hit with the audience but in terms of celluloid, it was not up to much.

village voice > film > Trick no treat by Dennis Lim
Trick's protagonist, Gabriel (Christian Campbell), is a model of bland, lowest-common- denominator appeal—a musical composer but not a drama queen, dorky but kinda cute, shy but kinky in an unthreatening way (his fantasy is to be serviced while he plays the piano).
Trick draws on audience empathy for Gabe—alienated Everygay—and revels in the reassuring accessibility of an idealized object of desire.
This film is so retrogressive that it would, in a sane world, inspire not drooling praise but a revolt—in that sense, Trick may have some revolutionary worth after all.

FILM REVIEW: Magic Trick -- Pure fun
Trick takes its title from a part of queer culture that many audience members may not be aware of.
This is the one night stand that occurs between two consenting people, in which it is implicitly understood by both parties that the relationship is strictly for the night: after they find a place and both are satisfied, they’ll go their separate ways, end of story.
Although the simple conflict of Trick could have been difficult to sustain for the length of a movie, and its gay male fantasy story could have been as trite as a trashy express lane paperback romance novel, it is thanks to Schafer’s sometimes quirky script that the movie is witty and wonderful.

Trick introduces us to the young writer, Gabriel, who shares a very small flat with his straight roommate.
Trick is not a movie to rent if you're looking for any sort of hardcore action, but it is a sweet enough film to watch with those who are a little on the fence about whether or not they are comfortable with gay material.

The film's premise is deceptively simple -- two guys meet on a Manhattan subway one evening, and then spend the rest of the night looking for a place to shag -- but as Gabriel and Mark's futile odyssey progresses, their relationship becomes more complicated, as lustful impulse gives way to emotional attraction.
The kick in Trick is watching the unexpected spark kindle between these two strangers, in large part because it comes as such a surprise to both of them.
Screenwriter Jason Schafer references musical theatre clichŽs throughout Trick as a means to inform the movie's romance, but this touch is light, never heavy.

 TheMovieBoy Review: Trick (1999)
One of the most talked-about independent films at this year's Sundance Film Festival, director Jim Fall's "Trick" is one of those "up-all-night" comedies in the vein of Martin Scorcese's 1985 "After Hours," which take place within a 24-hour period, and follow a certain character through his/her (mis)adventures during that one memorable night.
Not only does "Trick" thoroughly entertain in the context of this genre, but it also stands as being the most uplifting and romantic love story of the year, thanks to the extremely likable and innocent lug of a main character and the crisp, funny screenplay by Jason Schafer.
Plain and simple, the film is an idealistic fairy tale about something that most people constantly pine for from afar, in which you find love where you least expect it.

'Trick': The Night Is Young but Full of Detours
The rest of the film hangs on the slender premise that Gabe and Mark won't easily find a place to be alone, and that Gabe's Day-like sexual reticence will be a hurdle wherever they go.
Jim Fall, who directed the easygoing "Trick" from a screenplay by Jason Schafer, makes Gabe's living situation incomprehensible; mild as he is, he doesn't seem masochist enough for a belligerent straight roommate who keeps him locked out of the apartment and cowering in the hall.
The film is more comfortable in the piano bar that is one stop on the nighttime odyssey, along with a disco in TriBeCa.

Gerald Peary - film reviews - A Trick Of The Light
A Trick of the Light is German filmmaker Wim Wender's attempt to resuscitate the celebrity of three pioneer movie inventors, what he has done with Cuban musicians in The Buena Vista Social Club.
The key QandA (the film was shot in 1996) is with Max Skladanowsky's surviving 91-year-old daughter, who still remembers all, who comprehends and can articulate film technology, and who is an appealing great-great-granny type with humor and spirit.
A Trick of Light is such a relaxed, informal work that it feels reasonable when documentary slides into fiction, docudrama flashbacks of the life and times of the Skladanowskys.

The trick is to fold the leader of the film into an accordion pleat.
The advantage is that the folds of the pleated section of film are very unlikely to pull out of the take-up spool, so even if the film advance sprockets don't engage instantly, the film gets drawn across and will fall between the film rails, engage the sprockets, and life is good.

They manage to trick their marks into handing over the cash for safekeeping in a safety deposit box, but key holder Folks can't get back in time to retrieve it and skip town.
The screenwriting is often compared to the films of David Mamet, and while there may be some similarities in the stark dialogues, it's much less contrived and pulses with a natural life all its own.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about Trick Baby is that almost all of the cons that Blue and Folks pull are designed to play upon the inherent racism of their marks, whether fl or white.
