Topic: Trickle charging

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Trickle charging is normally done at a rate of about C/40 or one fortieth the capacity.
That is for a 1000 mah pack the trickle charge rate would be at 25 ma There has been a lot of discussion on whether you should charge a receiver or transmitter nicd pack with a trickle charge or not.
The reason is because the charger is probably charging at a rate of 50 mA (C/10 for a 500 mah pack) When trying to use that same charger on a 1000 mah pack you are charging at C/20 which is close to trickle charging.

For a rechargeable battery: the fraction, usually expressed as a percentage, of the electrical charge stored in a battery by charging that is recoverable during discharging.
In the charged state, the active material of the positive electrode is nickel oxide while that of the negative electrode is metallic iron, with a basic (potassium hydroxide) electrolyte.

 Battery Chargers and Charging Methods
Fast charging forces up the rate of chemical reaction in the cell (as does fast discharging) and it may be necessary to allow "rest periods" during the charging process for the chemical actions to propagate throughout the bulk of the chemical mass in the cell and to stabilise at progressive levels of charge.
During the charging process, short rest periods of 20 to 30 milliseconds, between pulses allow the chemical actions in the battery to stabilise by equalising the reaction throughout the bulk of the electrode before recommencing the charge.
Trickle charge Trickle charging is designed to compensate for the self discharge of the battery.

Patent 4742289: Method for the cyclical trickle charging of a chargeable battery intended for emergency operation
The present invention relates to a method for the cyclical trickle charging of a chargeable battery intended for emergency operation, in which case the charging voltage used is the output voltage from a source of d.c.
The battery is trickle charged in order to keep it at a high level of readiness for emergency operation, and this takes place in a conventional manner by connecting a continuous charging voltage across the battery, by means of which the battery voltage is made to stay at the specified value.
During charging stage 6 charging of the battery will take place at an increased charging voltage for an interval of time d which is of the same order of magnitude as, but longer than the interval of time a.

Trickle charging is one way to do that, charge replacement the other.
Since I doubt a trickle charger came with your battery, we will need to be a bit more inventive if we want to trickle charge our batteries (or you can go out and buy a commercial trickle charger).
Also, even though your batteries are on trickle charge, you still need to do a full discharge test every month or so to ensure their condition.

Great Hobbies - Tech Talk Charging Systems
Charging at a low enough current such that the charger may be left on the battery indefinitely is called trickle charging.
Trickle chargers are generally used in conjunction with either a system charger or fast/peak charger to maintain the battery after a normal charge and may even come as part of a more sophisticated charging system circuitry.
Timed charging is a method of fast charging where the charger is on a mechanical timer so that once the timer runs out, the charge is shut off.

Patent 4853607: Non-isolated thermally responsive battery charger
The trickle charge path is provided by an impedance shunting the thermostat and is operative as a current path when the thermostat is in its open condition.
The trickle charge path can be a resistor where the thermostat is in the DC part of the charger circuit or a capacitor where the thermostat is in the AC part of the charge circuit.
In general, the `trickle` current level provided through the resistor R.sub.1 is sufficient to prevent self-discharge of the battery B, a 22 Kohms resistor R.sub.t providing a 5-10 milliamperes trickle current in the case of the preferred embodiment.

 Alpha4 FAQ
The charge acceptance of battery is higher at the slower charge rate of "I" charger and leaving it for several hours on trickle puts small additional charge into the battery.
Charge acceptance of batteries is higher at low current charge rates so use "I" charger and leave for couple hours on trickle when time allows.
At C/50 continuous trickle charge the battery longevity would be considerably higher than at C/10 continuous charge but slightly lower than if battery was not continuously trickle charged.

Trickle Charger Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
There are basically two types of trickle chargers, the first uses electronics to insure that the trickle rate is "forced" into the battery and the second ends up suppling the trickle rate by design.
The idea of a trickle charger is that it can be left charging the battery continuously without fear of damage to the battery.
As I described before, a trickle charger can be of two types, one that always supplies the trickle rate of current, or the one that starts higher but ends up at the trickle rate.

A: If the batteries are the same voltage and roughly the same capacity, vintage and condition, you can connect them in parallel (positives joined together and negatives joined together) and charge them as if they were one battery bank.
There’s no need to keep the charger on all the time, as all you are trying to do is replace the losses from periodic self-discharge.
Here’s the routine: once a month connect the batteries in parallel, top them up to full capacity with a regulated battery charger, then disconnect the positive wires so they are electrically isolated during the time between charges.
