In fact, in Puerto Rico the young Tricolors were trapped with young Spice finches which they look very much like and you would have to look closely to tell them apart or wait for bits of adult color to come through.
Many of the Tricolors that used to be imported into the U.S. were captured in Puerto Rico where they are a feral species.

As Kurt noted, Lonchura punctulata (Nutmeg Mannikin, Spotted Munia) is out because a juvenile would have fl on the bill.
Jill's suggestion of Lonchura striata (Striated Munia, White-rumped Munia) fails due to the breast being much too light (as well as likely absence of white on the rump, and the bill color is wrong).
These have recently been split, and are also called Black-headed Munia, Tricolored Nun, and others.

Hi birders, I received a response from Robin Restall, author of "Munias and Mannikins" (Yale University Press 1997) about the Eco Pond bird: "The mystery bird is a juvenile of a Lonchura species, certainly one of the subgenus Munia.
My guess is that it is either Lonchura malacca [Tricolored Munia] or Lonchura atricapilla [Chestnut Munia].
This munia was originally reported (without plumage details) as a Nutmeg Mannikin, and would have been "forever" considered to have been correctly identified had it not been photographed.

Tricolored Munia is Lonchura malacca, while L. atricapilla is Chestnut Munia.
The first is the form in PR, it has a white breast and sides and a fl belly, whereas on L. atricapilla, the white is replaced by chestnut, so that there is no white.

Tricolored Munias on Loop Road   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Nancy Freedman and I saw 2 adult Tricolored Munias on Loop Rd this morning.
I didn't note the exact location, but they were roughly one mile west of the westermost trash can/box (this makes sense if you know Loop Rd).
In the last two years they have been seen at Eco Pond and the Dry Tortugas, including a bird that was possibly a juvenile Tricolored Munia (it might have been the related Chestnut Munia...adult Tricolored have white flanks instead of chestnut, but the juveniles are virtually indistinguishable).

Given the close connections between many of the local large cane operations and those in the Caribbean, it is conceivable that someone brought them to Costa Rica as pet birds and they later escaped or were released.
However, Jim also spoke with someone here who used to be involved in the pet shop business and he immediately recognized the munias from the illustration Jim showed him.
Thinking that the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) ought to have records of all exotic species that are legally imported for the pet trade, I recently rang their offices.
