Trident is the name of the layout engine for the Microsoft Windows version of Internet Explorer.
It was first introduced with the release of Internet Explorer version 4 in October 1997, has been steadily upgraded and remains in use today.
Trident was designed as a software component to allow software developers to easily add web browsing functionality to their own applications.

Trident (layout engine) - CompWisdom   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Trident (also known as MSHTML) is the name of the layout engine for the Microsoft Windows version of Internet Explorer.
The proprietary Trident (Trident: A spear with three prongs) layout engine was developed by Microsoft for use in their web browser, Internet Explorer.
After a several-year-long development halt of Trident, Internet Explorer’s layout engine, the developers are currently working to add support for features other browsers have supported for quite a while, rather than focusing on some of the refinement details illustrated by the Acid2 test.

  Hawker-Siddeley Trident
With the engines clustered at the rear as in the Sud Caravelle, the wing was left free from engine mounts and was designed with high-speed cruise in mind, with a speed of over 600 mph being the goal.
However the engines remained the same, and BEA rejected the design as being unable to get off the ground in hot-and-high conditions, given that the 2E was having so many problems already.
Instead of attempting to fit a new engine, which would be difficult given that one was buried in the tail, Hawker-Siddeley decided to add a fourth engine in the tail, the tiny RB.162 turbojet, fed from the same intake as the middle Spey.

The layout engine is the part of the browser program that reads an HTML page and applies the browser's default style rules, the user's personal style sheet (if any), and the style sheets associated with the page being displayed.
The layout engine is the primary determinant of whether a browser is broken, quirky, or compliant.
For example, the layout engine used in Firefox is known by the code-name Gecko.

Gecko is generally considered to be the second most-popular layout engine on the Web, after Trident (used by Internet Explorer for Windows since version 4), and followed by KHTML (used by Konqueror), WebCore (used by Safari), Presto (used by Opera), and Tasman (used by Internet Explorer for Mac).
The new layout engine was developed in parallel with the old, with the intention being to integrate it into Netscape Communicator when it was mature and stable.
For a time, Gecko was used to refer to both the old NGLayout layout engine and XPFE (cross-platform front-end) — the new XML-based Mozilla user interface, rendered by NGLayout—but it is now used solely to refer to the layout engine.

The efficiency of the new engine design made it possible to lower fuel consumption by an average of 10% compared to the 3200 turbo engine, with peaks of 30% at higher performance levels.
Because of this layout, the load is distributed rationally between the front and rear axles (respectively 53-47% of kerb weight) with significant advantages in terms of the stability and balance of the car and maximum traction which translates to greater acceleration.

As the name suggests, the layout engine is responsible for converting the colourless text code it receives from the controller into colourful webpages comprising of tables, pictures, backgrounds, bullets, headings and more.
Since the layout engines are required to conform with the standards laid out by W3C, it is common to build layout engines that are re-usable in different Web browsers and even other software that require the capability of displaying webpages.
Since Layout Engines themselves are proprietary, the owners also accommodate additional functionality that might not be a W3C requirement but may be useful in their application.

Microsoft's HTML Help is Not Just for Help Systems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The current beta of HTML Help uses the layout engine for Internet Explorer 3.0 (IE 3.0), but certain features of HTML Help, such as the compressed file format and popup windows, will require IE 4.0, since these features have resulted in modifications to the IE layout engine.
As a result, most Web authors use the editor for as much Web authoring as they can and then resort to opening the HTML code in a word processor, adding the unsupported code by hand, and crossing their fingers that the new code won't be stripped out when they open it in the editor again.
Because Trident is both a browser and an editor, the authoring and viewing remain synchronized.

Browsers may do layout incorrectly because they are not standards-compliant.
Browsers may do layout correctly but unexpectedly because some elements of standards are optional, ambiguous, or unspecified; because layout is affected by user settings, PC configuration, and display technologies; or because you wrongly understand how layout should be done.
