The Mass was originally said in Aramaic or Hebrew since these were the languages which Christ and the Apostles spoke, the words amen, alleluia, hosanna and sabbaoth are Aramaic words which were retained and are still found in the Latin Mass of today.
Latin ceased to be a vernacular language between the 7th and 9th centuries; however, the Mass continued to be offered in Latin because much of the liturgy had already been established in that language.
Although the Latin Mass dates back to 150 AD, the advent of the New Mass (Novus Ordo Missae) on March 22, 1970, by Paul VI has caused the it to be offered by fewer priests.

The Tridentine Latin Mass was instituted following the Council of Trent in the late 1500s until it was replaced in 1969 following the Second Vatican Council's call for liturgical reform.
Having had some training and experience with the old Mass, he concluded that "It was clear to me that a lot had been lost." Following his ordination in 1985, although he celebrated the Novus Ordo exclusively for nearly ten years, he found himself disappointed with it and drawn to the old Mass.
Despite the documents which establish the restoration of the Tridentine Mass to the liturgy of the Church, several members of religious orders indicated use of a universal indult would depend on whether the member's superior would permit it.

There is no proof that the Tridentine Mass (which dates from the 1500's) is similiar to the Mass celebrated in the early church.
I don't claim that the Tridentine Mass is almost the same as the Liturgy used by the early Christians, but I do deny that the Pauline Mass is somehow much more faithful to their Liturgy.
The Priest, as in the worship in the temple, is the one privileged (sanctified) to stand on "holy ground" (the sanctuary), therefore, the altar rail.

One comment from the "Reflections" column that struck me was the one from the young person who defended the ability of the young to appreciate the Latin mass.
I quite agree that it is often "assumed" that only the aged could possibly assimilate something as arcane as a Latin liturgy, something they might only dimly remember from their childhood.
I think there are only two churches offering a Latin mass here- one Novo Ordo (well out in the suburbs) and one Tridentine, officiated by the Archbishop, also several miles away.

My subsequent experience with the Latin Mass revealed that the priest faces the tabernacle of the Most High, and rightly so, since the priest is speaking to God and not the congregation.

While I haven't given "blanket permission" for the celebration for the Tridentine Mass in the diocese, it is, however, a permission that I give very readily, and has never been refused for those who have requested it.
The reason is that I think the Mass according to the 1962 missal, especially with John Paul II opening it up, it should be a normal thing for any priest who wants to do so, and is trained to do so, to make it available to the faithful and for himself.
I have the Mass in another parish in the southern part of the diocese by a priest who was ordained in the Novus Ordo, who most generously says the Mass, and knows how to say the Novus Ordo and the 1962 missal.

This is why we call it the 'traditional Mass' - the Mass which was literally 'handed down' and again 'The Mass of all times.' I avoid the use of the phrase 'Latin Mass,' because this can refer to a variety of different rites including the Novus Ordo Missae.
The essentials were recognized and as long as flowing water was used, the baptizing individual had the proper intention, and the proper words said, the rite was effective.

The Tridentine Rite is that form of Mass which was used almost everywhere in the Roman Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council in the 1960’s.
The Tridentine Rite was never condemned as something bad, it simply fell out of use as Catholics became accustomed to the “New Mass” which was offered in the people’s spoken language with many simplifications of the elaborate rubrics of the “Old Mass.”
Most Catholics were very satisfied with this situation, especially since the new rite did allow for the continuation of the use of the Latin language if desired and even the use of the old altar where the priest faced the tabernacle instead of the people and the use of the Communion rail.
