TRIGAT is a European programme involving France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The TRIGAT LR missile is being developed by the Euromissile Dynamics Group, a consortium of which the members are the EADS company (formerly Aerospatiale-Matra of France and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace of Germany) and MBDA (formerly Matra BAe Dynamics of UK).
TRIGAT LR is an autonomous fire and forget missile, unlike the medium range version in which the laser beam has to be directed onto the target until impact.

In terms of improvements, Trigat thrust-vectored missile guidance is by means of a scanning laser-beam system, providing increased resistance to countermeasures and obviating the need for wire controls.
However, Trigat has been fraught with difficulties, not least the changed strategic environment since the operational requirement for the weapon was written in 1982.

The trials were sponsored by the UK Ministry of Defence, and were designed to test the performance of the missile under ‘hot-dry’ conditions.
The WPA was selected for the TRIGAT program in view of the optimum climatic conditions, purpose-built range facilities, available technical and infrastructure support, and safety and security considerations.

Recently, I published piece under the title "the price of collaboration", pointing out that the UK government's participation in the abortive "Trigat" European anti-tank missile projects had cost us £314 million before we abandoned them and bought off-the-shelf US missiles.
As always though, this has turned out to be the tip of the iceberg and, with further research, it looks like the "Europeanisation" of our defence policy has so far cost us over £1 billion and looks set to cost us many billions more.
Within the framework of FCS, the US went on to develop the vehicle, known as the Sika combat vehicle, while we went on to buy the Pather which, supposedly does the same job.
