Over the first two hundred years, Trim Castle was the centre of administration for Meath and demarcated the outer boundary of The Pale, however in the 16 and 17th Centuries it had declined in importance, except as an important Military site.

Trim is, in Tom McNeill’s words, “the finest and largest castle in Ireland” (McNeill 244), and it has a reputation as the king of Irish castles.
Trim Castle is even mentioned in the heroic Norman poem “The Song of Dermot and the Earl.” It first began as a ringwork castle, and the remains of a large trench, bracing posts, and postholes of a wooden structure are evidence of this.
Reconstruction of Trim Castle was undertaken by Hugh de Lacy in 1175.

Dunsany Castle and Demesne are situated in the townland of Dunsany (Dun Samhnaigh or Dun Samhna), between the historic town of Trim, with Ireland's largest castle (King John's Castle or simply Trim Castle, a former Dunsany holding) and the large village of Dunshaughlin on one of the country's main routes, in County Meath.
The Castle was established as a towered fortification of the Norman Pale (an area of strong Norman/ English control in the east of Ireland, established shortly after Strongbow's invasion) in the period 1180 - 1200; construction is believed to have begun in 1180/1181.
The Castle was built for a key Norman warlord, Hugh de Lacy, whose chief seat was at Trim (Trim Castle has been made available for viewing having passed from Lord Dunsany to the State some years back and undergone several million pounds worth of work; details of the site including access are here).

On the basis of the present limited evidence, it seems likely that the curtain wall and the huge stone keep, which envelopes the stump of the old motte, were begun by de Lacy during the 1170s.
They must have been completed by 1224 when William Marshall, the justiciar, besieged the castle for seven weeks, for it is unlikely the castle could have withstood his army for such a period without the protection of the curtain walls.
It is often claimed that the upper rooms of this gatehouse were used to house the young Prince Hal, later Henry V, who was left at Trim by Richard II in 1399 before his fateful return to England.
