In 1498, Christopher Columbus landed in Trinidad and as was the practice in the so called age of Discovery and Exploration, took possession of the island in the name of the King and Queen of Spain.
This was a term which was used by the French and English to describe the Carnival celebrations of the African population during the period 1860 to 1896.
While the slaves and free coloureds were not forbidden from celebrating carnival, they were compelled to stay within their own stratum of society and not presume to rub shoulders with the aristocracy.

The organization responsible for organizing the annual cruises for the Spice Mass celebrations was faced with disappointing news four days before embarking; Pan Trinbago found out that the Windward II which was hired to carry the passengers is without a passenger certificate.
The Windward II was scheduled to leave Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday at 1:00am, to arrive in Grenada for the Carnival celebrations on Monday and Tuesday; but this would no longer be possible since they may not get the certificate until Friday morning.
