Trinity Church Cemetery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trinity Church Cemetery consists of three separate burial grounds associated with Trinity Church in Manhattan, New York, USA.
In 1842, the church, running out of space in its churchyard, established Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum in Upper Manhattan between Broadway and Riverside Drive, at the Chapel of the Intercession (now The Church of the Intercession), formerly the location of John James Audubon's estate.
A non-denominational cemetery, it is listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places and is the only remaining active cemetery in Manhattan.

Manhattan History - Trinity, Child Of Empire
The largest of Trinity's grants to other institutions was that of 1752 to King's College (chartered 1754), consisting of the tract between Murray and Barclay streets, and between Church Street and the Hudson, still referred to in the reports of Columbia University as the Lower Estate.
Of the three cemeteries, the Trinity Churchyard, St. Paul's, and the cemetery bisected by Broadway at 153rd to 155th streets were still the abodes of the dead, but the Episcopal cemetery formerly at Hudson, Leroy, and Clarkson streets has been devoted to the pursuits of the living as Hudson Park.
In the case of Trinity, the latter were seldom involved, since the parish rarely improved its lands, leaving the risks and the larger rewards to its lessees.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Cemeteries
As a rule the Christians, though their cemeteries were separate, accommodated themselves in things permissible to the burial usages of the peoples among whom they lived.
Certain it is that the churchyard cross was always a conspicuous feature of the consecrated enclosure and that the churchyard usually afforded sanctuary as secure as that of the church itself for those who were fleeing from justice or private vengeance.
This churchyard procession on Palm Sunday, in which, as early as the time of Lanfranc, the Blessed Sacrament was often carried in a portable shrine, as well as all the relics of the church, was a very imposing ceremony.

The attached churchyard became a graveyard for both Protestants and Catholics.
By the eighteenth century, Glasnevin had become quite a fashionable area for families of distinction to reside, despite (according to Mant's History of the Church of Ireland) a comment reputed to have originated from a Protestant Archbishop of Dublin - that "when any couple had a mind to be wicked, they would retire to Glasnevin".
The most noted residence in the area was the house of Delville, its name deriving from an amalgamation of the surnames of two of its tenants, a Dr. Helsam and a Dr. Delany, as Heldeville, both Fellows of Trinity College.

The chancellor identified two main, not wholly separable, issues - one 'of principle' as to the appropriateness of the phrase (phrases similar to the offending one were found in other churchyards in the diocese); and one of 'consistency' (in that the petition challenged a well settled parish policy).
In turning to the change in policy and the effect on the running of the churchyard, the chancellor considered Re Holy Trinity Churchyard, Freckleton [1994] 1 WLR 1588.
He reaffirmed the rule that a churchyard is governed by different considerations from those applying in a municipal cemetery and concluded that wording that was seemly and consonant with Christian faith would be allowed on memorials, and that those factors did not require a ban on expressions of grief.
