Trinity College occupies that portion of the University Reserve which was granted by the Government of Victoria to the Church of England under the authority of Parliament.
The College was founded by graduates of Cambridge and Oxford Universities and of Trinity College, Dublin, who were determined to make it possible for students to have in a College of the University of Melbourne an education at least as good as they had in the great collegiate universities of Britain and Ireland.
Trinity College Foundation Studies (TCFS) was established in 1989 to support the University, and further to expand the College's educational and cultural horizons, by providing a high-quality pathway for international students wishing to study at the University of Melbourne.

The Leeper Library of Trinity College, the University of Melbourne, is a private library covering all fields of knowledge, and is for the use and benefit of currently-enrolled students, tutors and staff, both resident and non-resident.
The Mollison Library is the Diocesan Library of the Anglican Church of the Province of Victoria, and was endowed by Miss Elizabeth Mollison as a memorial to her brother, Alexander Fullerton Mollison, a pioneer squatter and overlander.
As Trinity is a private library, access is generally available to enrolled member of the College, Anglican clergy and laity, and members of the Trinity College Theological School.

The University was established by Hugh Childers in 1853 by an Act of the Victorian Parliament passed on Saturday 22 January, and classes commenced in 1855 with three professors and sixteen students.
The inauguration of the University was made possible by the wealth resulting from Victoria's gold rush, and the University was designed to be a "civilising influence" at a time of rapid settlement and commercial growth (Selleck, 2003).
Seven of the colleges are situated in an arc around the cricket oval at the northern edge of the campus, known as the College Crescent, with the other five within 15 minutes walk of the University of Melbourne.

Hope of Linux tackling the desktop market has suffered a reality check with the University of Melbourne’s Trinity College dumping the penguin in favor of Unix cousin Mac OS X, not x86-based rival, Windows.
Debian has been the Linux distribution of choice at the college since it started with Linux in 2000, and remains attractive to students.
On the server side, the college also runs Debian, but may look at Apple Xserves in the future.
