The aeolian harp (wind harp) and autoharp are technically not harps because their strings are not perpendicular to the soundboard.
While the harp is mentioned in most translations of the Bible, King David being the most prominent musician, the Biblical "harp" was actually a kinnor, a type of lyre with 10 strings.
Folk harps with levers installed have a lever close to the top of each string; when it is engaged, it shortens the string so its pitch is raised a semitone, resulting in a sharped note if the string was a natural, or a natural note if the string was a flat.

The Trinity College harp, one of Ireland's national treasures, is the harp from which the national symbol of Ireland is copied.
The pedal harp was invented in 1720 with the first single-action pedal harp which could raise the pitch of the selected strings by a half step, allowing the harp to be chromatic and be played in most keys.
The pedal harp was improved in 1750 when the early pedal-operated string catching hooks were replaced with metal plates that gripped the strings while leaving them in the same plane, and in 1792 rotating disks were substituted for the metal plates.
