Great Court is the main court of Trinity College, Cambridge, and reputed to be the largest enclosed court in Europe.
The court was completed by Thomas Nevile, master of the college, in the early years of the 17th century, when he rearranged the existing buildings to form a single court.
The Great Gate is home to the famous statue of founder Henry VIII whose sceptre was replaced by a chair leg by students in the 19th century.

A slew of eccentric poets went to Trinity: Lord Byron (1788-1824) jumped into the fountain of Great Court, Trinity College, to attract the attention of the headmaster's daughter.
Trinity's Great Court is the largest university court in the world and is also the site of a famous 380-yard dash, the one shown in the movie "Chariots of Fire." The two runners had to complete the circling of the Great Court before the clock finished striking 12, that is, in 43 seconds.

One of the earliest records of Michaelhouse is a 1574 drawing, where it is shown as a tower with a range of chambers to the west.
Other picture maps date from 1592 and 1688, but by the time of the latter, Trinity’s Great Court and Neville’s Court were complete, virtually all traces of Michaelhouse had been eliminated, and even the great gateway of King’s Hall had been moved.

The 9th Circuit overturned a lower court decision earlier this year that had ordered more environmental studies be done before the 2000 restoration plan is implemented.
The appeals court ruled the existing studies in the plan were adequate.
Hull characterized the court's decision as "mixed," meaning the court did uphold the lower court's decisions that at least two biological studies relied on in the 2000 plan were inadequate.

This view shows the back of the Great gate, the chapel and also the Great fountain......Trinity College were trying to make a statement with all their "greats".
The fountain was only allowed once the Grey Friars gave permission for a water channel to be dug in the early part of the seventeenth centuary.
You cannot do anything in cambridge without planning permission!
